NARRATOR

In the last episode of VOID, Jonas and the landing team had reached the surface of Earth and entered the colony. As they began spreading the word of the impending comet they suffered a setback in Jonas’ quest to save his friend. In order to save the colony, they’re going to overthrow the council.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS WALKING QUICKLY, WHEEL CHAIR


INT. COLONY CORRIDOR - NIGHT

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(while walking quickly) Terry, you’re going to take Gerald back to the shuttle.

TERRY MENDELSON

(while walking quickly, pushing the wheel chair)

I should be going with the 2 of you.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I know but we need to get him out of here. Get Gerald back to Anko and help guard the ship. We need him and his knowledge of the colony now. Serebella and I are going to make this quick.

TERRY MENDELSON

People actually livehere? Man this place is falling apart. Look at all the cracks in the walls!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

The colony has been in rough shape for years but this dilapidation is worse than I thought it’d be.

TERRY MENDELSON

I’m a little concerned about falling through the ground with this wheel chair.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

We don’t have far to go, just keep moving.

SEREBELLA REON

(while walking quickly) Where are we going anyway?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

If memory serves me, the communication center is a couple of levels below us. We’re going to escort Terry back to the exit corridor and then do a public service announcement.

SEREBELLA REON

How?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

They have a makeshift speaker system throughout the top levels of the colony. If we can access it, I can make an announcement able to reach enough people to really shake things up and discredit the council.

SEREBELLA REON

Do you think that will be enough?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I hope so. It’s the only shot we have. It’s time for the people to rise up and take control over the privileged asswipes that have been running this place for far too long.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS AND WHEEL CHAIR COMING TO A STOP

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

Ok Terry. This is where we leave you. Head straight down that tunnel. That will lead you to where we came in. Get Anko to help you load Gerald onto the shuttle. Tell Anko to warm up the engines.

TERRY MENDELSON

Will do. Be careful.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, WHEEL CHAIR MOVING AWAY FROM THEM, TRANSITION, FOOTSTEPS RUNNING

INT. COLONY CORRIDOR - COMMUNICATIONS - NIGHT

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(while approaching) Good, no guards!

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS STOP, DOOR LATCH LOCKED

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

I knew that was too easy. Locked. Ok, give me a sec.

SOUND: GUN HANDLE HITTING DOOR

SEREBELLA REON

Are you serious right now? Move behind me.

SOUND: BRUSHING JONAS ASIDE, CONUCUSSION GUN, DOOR OPENING

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(walking in) Your way is better.

SEREBELLA REON

(walking in) Always.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS OVER DOOR RUBBLE THEN NORMAL SURFACE

JONAS ALDRIDGE

No-one is here.

SEREBELLA REON

The security here is really lame.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Lucky for us.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS MOVING AROUND, COMING TO A HALT

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

Uh, I’ve never actually been in this room before. Do you know anything about sound systems?

SOUND: TRANSITION, DRINK BEING POURED, PERSON DRINKING

INT. CHING SHE BRIDGE - NIGHT

MADDOX KANE

Are you sure you should be drinking like that? You might have to quickly remote pilot the shuttle.

URSULA NASH

(jokingly and not)

I wouldn’t worry about Captain Rex Maddox. I’ve watched this woman fly us through a comet field with a hangover that would have killed a normal man.

REGINA REX

Thanks Ursula. Don’t worry Maddox, this is casual drinking, not real drinking. You’ll know when I’m really drinking.

URSULA NASH

Trust us, you’ll know.

REGINA REX

I’m just killing time so I don’t go crazy. I hate when the crew is split up like this.

URSULA NASH

Me too.

MADDOX KANE

You do? Both of you? Why?

AWKWARD PAUSE

URSULA NASH

Well for me, it’s Jonas. He’s down there, I’m up here. I feel helpless that I can’t do anything for him.

And I feel scared that something might happen to him.

MADDOX KANE

Can he not take care of himself?

URSULA NASH

He can, just fine. But in his heart, he’s a scientist, not a soldier.

REGINA REX

Which is where Serebella comes in. Terry is there to help too. But especially Serebella.

MADDOX KANE

And that worries you?

REGINA REX

It does. Normally, a captain has to be detached from these things but I also have an emotional attachment just as Ursula does.

MADDOX KANE

I see. On the Nepenthe we’re taught that the greater good is the only attachment that’s acceptable. Life is fleeting so to become attached is to become distracted from living it.

URSULA NASH

That’s nice but nearly impossible when you’re in love someone.

MADDOX KANE

Oh yes. Which is why we’ve studied love as a condition but avoided it for ourselves.

URSULA NASH

No-one loves each other on your base?

MADDOX KANE

We have admiration and respect for one another. We also care about each other’s well-being, safety and health.

REGINA REX

That sounds a bit like love to me. What about passion?

MADDOX KANE

Passion for our work perhaps.

URSULA NASH

And sex?

MADDOX KANE

We’ve experienced copulation but more as an exercise. We find obsession with lust to be a distraction.

REGINA REX

(taking a drink)

What’s wrong with distractions?

MADDOX KANE

It diminishes your focus on the work.

URSULA NASH

(walking up to Regina with a glass)

And what if you have no work at the moment?

SOUND: GLASS CLINKING, DRINK BEING POURED, TAKING A FEW SIPS

MADDOX KANE

There’s always work.

REGINA REX

Not here, not now anyway.

MADDOX KANE

I could be working on my report of the warp drive.

URSULA NASH

Or, you could stay here and have drinks with us.

MADDOX KANE

I don’t normally imbibe such...

REGINA REX

(cutting them off and pouring a drink)

Think of it as an experiment.

SOUND: DRINK BEING POURED, TRANSITION, BUTTONS BEING PUSHED, LEVERS BEING PULLED

SEREBELLA REON

(from across the room) Did that do it?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(on the other side of the room)

No, I don’t think so.

SOUND: MORE BUTTONS, POWER TURNING ON

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

There! That did it!

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS

SEREBELLA REON

(walking up to Jonas)

I can’t believe this stuff still works.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Barely. Most of the infrastructure in here has been falling apart for years.

SOUND: MIXING BOARD SWITCHES AND NOBS

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

I think this is for the microphone.

SOUND: FEEBACK THROUGHOUT THE COLONY

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

(reverberating through the PA system)

Oh shit. Is it on? It is! Ok. Attention, citizens of the colony.

SOUND: JONAS’ VOICE ADJUSTING, FEEDBACK DIMINSHING

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

My name is Dr. Jonas Aldridge. I was once a citizen here, just like all of you. Some of you may even remember me. You may have also heard that I was dead. Well, I’m very much alive and that is just one of many lies the council has been telling you...

SOUND: TRANSITION, KNOCKING ON DOOR, FOOTSTEPS, DOOR OPENING

INT. COLONY CORRIDOR - LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS’ CHAMBERS - LATE NIGHT

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(walking in a huff, opening the door)

What’s the meaning of this disturbance?! Do you have any idea what time it is?!

GUARD #2

Sir, there’s been a break in at communications. They’re making an announcement over the speakers to the colony!

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

Well, get after them, why are you bothering me with this? Tell General Harlow!

GUARD #2

We did tell the general and she thought it important to inform you that a man claiming to be Jonas Aldridge is the one who broke in.

PAUSE A BEAT

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(menacingly)

What did you just say?

SOUND: TRANSITION, GLASSES CLINKING, PEOPLE DRINKING, LAUGHING


INT. CHING SHE BRIDGE - LATE NIGHT

MADDOX KANE

(giggling, very drunk, for the first time)

I’m not sure what the apppppeal is, was, is. I don’t feel, a, thig, thing.

REGINA REX

(laughing) Sure you don’t.

URSULA NASH

(laughing, lightly drunk)

Oh, I haven’t laughed like this in awhile.

MADDOX KANE

Captain, captain, I noticed, you don’t see, seemmm, seem, to be drrinkking very much.

REGINA REX

Well Maddox, I have to keep sharp in case I need to fly the landing team back up.

MADDOX KANE

Oh I see. Spoiled sport.

URSULA NASH

Hey now, don’t go giving the captain a hard time. She’s being responsible and I’m proud of her for that.

REGINA REX

Wow, I never thought I’d be thanking someone for referring to me as “responsible”.

URSULA NASH

Ha! I admire you captain. You’re a good person.

REGINA REX

Don’t make it weird.

PAUSE A BEAT

MADDOX KANE

What’s the plan anyway?

REGINA REX

What do you mean?

MADDOX KANE

I mean, once they get done on Earth, then what?

REGINA REX

We head to the space station and see what’s going on. We have to tell whoever’s in charge what we found.

URSULA NASH

And then we’ll have to coordinate a massive exodus starting as soon as we can.

MADDOX KANE

After that?

REGINA REX

After that we eventually leave here to start our new lives on Europa.

MADDOX KANE

What about me?

REGINA REX

What about you?

MADDOX KANE

When do I get to go home?

AWKWARD PAUSE

REGINA REX

I don’t know the answer to that Maddox. We only have so much time before the comet comes. I have to stay here to help with the move to our new home.

MADDOX KANE

I see. It looks like I don’t get to go home then.

URSULA NASH

Maybe not for awhile. But after we get to Europa, who knows? Right captain?

REGINA REX

That’s right. Until then, you could consider here your new home.

MADDOX KANE

That might be nice.

URSULA NASH

You have friends here Maddox. I know Terry is very happy to be working with you too.

MADDOX KANE

I have to confess. I do feel a sense of... I’m not sure how to put it. Camaraderie? No, that’s not quite right...

REGINA REX

Family, maybe?

MADDOX KANE

I suppose so, yes. In a sense to be sure.

URSULA NASH

You don’t have to have the same blood to consider people family. With all we’ve been through, who else can relate to such experiences and grow closer too?

MADDOX KANE

I’ve never really had a sense of that before. The scientists on the Nepenthe would see family as a...

URSULA NASH

(finishing her sentence in unison with Regina)

Distraction.

REGINA REX

(finishing her sentence in unison with Ursula)

SOUND: LAUGHING

MADDOX KANE

(also laughing)

Yes, that’s it. Will you and Jonas move forward together as a couple?

URSULA NASH

It looks that way. We have plans to move in together and work as a team to help with the evacuation. Do you have plans with Serebella Captain Rex?

REGINA REX

We talked about it. Moving in seems like our plan too. We’re taking it step by step. A lot will depend on what we find at the station.

URSULA NASH

What do you expect when we get there?

REGINA REX

I have no idea. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

SOUND: TRANSITION, OCCASIONAL MIC FEEDBACK, NUMEROUS FOOTSTEPS CONVERGING


INT. COLONY CORRIDOR - COMMUNICATIONS - LATE NIGHT

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(walking up to the gathered security force)

Alright, I’m here General Harlow. Tell me the situation.

GENERAL HARLOW

They’ve barricaded themselves in the Communication Center sir.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

How many are there?

GENERAL HARLOW

We can’t tell. At least 2, maybe more.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

Fine, has he said anything else since...

SOUND: MIC CLICKING BACK ON, FEEDBACK INTERRUPTING

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(over speaker)

Again, people of the colony. Don’t believe the lies of the council.

They’ve lied to you for years now. They lied about the surface conditions. They lie about the food and water supplies they’re hoarding. You can’t believe anything they say.

SOUND: JONAS ANNOUNCING MORE IN THE BACKGROUND

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

We have to shut him up! Is there any way to shut the power down?

GENERAL HARLOW

Not without cutting off our own access to the sound system in the process. You won’t be able to make any announcements for awhile.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(continuing speech over speaker)

There are other colonies out there! They can help. There are only 4 years until the comet arrives. But we found a new home and we’re going to coordinate with the station for a mass evacuation. There is hope despite what the council tells you! Don’t listen to their propaganda!

Harris and his followers want to control you for their own benefit! I can tell you first hand the council has never cared about any of you. They only care about themselves.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

Do whatever it takes. Shut him down!

GENERAL HARLOW

Yes sir. And after we disable their broadcast, do you want them taken dead or alive?

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

Kill whoever he is with. Keep Aldridge alive if you can, I want to look into his eyes when the time comes.

GENERAL HARLOW

Yes Lord Chancellor.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(continuing speech over speaker)

Now is the time to rise and support the revolt! Wake up and take over this colony! You’ll never survive with the council in charge! They’re using you! They’re lying to you!

They have lived like kings while you have suffered below!

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

By the way General Harlow; if you can’t take Aldridge alive, then so be it. Just make sure he feels every moment of his death.

SOUND: TRANSITION

INT. COLONY - COMMUNICATIONS CENTER - EARLY MORNING

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(in the middle of speaking)

The council have lied to you for years about the surface, the other colonies, the cavers! All of it has been...

SOUND: POWER SHUTTING DOWN, LIGHTS OFF

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

Well, I put out as much information as I can.

SEREBELLA REON

It’s up to them now Jonas. These people have to take the initiative if they want to survive.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I guess you’re right. Time to get out of here.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(from a distance away, shouting)

Surrender! You have no hope of getting out of here. You might as well give yourselves up!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(yelling back)

Is that you Council Seat Harris? I’m surprised they’d wake you up for this.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

So, it is true. You survived after all. Although I can’t for the life of me think of why you would risk coming back.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I came back for my friend and to warn everyone. There’s a comet heading for...

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(cutting him off)

Oh I heard your little speech. Comet indeed. Come now Jonas, do you really think we would believe such falsehoods?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

It’s no lie. Why else would I come back here?

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

To exact revenge on ME of course! That’s what this is all about! Oh, and it’s LORD CHANCELLOR Harris now!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Oh I heard Lord Jackass, I mean, your lordship.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

Levee your feeble insults all you like. You’ll find the citizens of this colony loyal to the council and to me. Especially your little friend Gerald. He serves me and me alone.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Not any more he doesn’t you prick! Your time has come to an end Harris!

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

You and your friend have had your chance to surrender Aldridge. Now, we kill you both. General, you may breach and execute the infiltrators.

SEREBELLA REON

(prepping)

Get ready Jonas. Back to back.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING

SEREBELLA REON (CONT'D)

Here they come!

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS, DOOR BEING BREACHED, GUNSHOTS, BULLETS GLANCING OFF OF BODY ARMOR, PULSE WEAPONS BEING FIRED, BODIES HITTING THE WALL AND THE FLOOR

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(while fighting) Serebella! Behind you!

SEREBELLA REON

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(falling to the level below)

SOUND: JONAS HITTING THE GROUND

SEREBELLA REON

(yelling down at him through the hole)

Jonas! Are you alright?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I think my ankle is sprained but I can walk.

SEREBELLA REON

How do I get down to you?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

You don’t, not from here anyway! I’ll meet you at the exit, keep going that way!

SEREBELLA REON

No way! I’m not leaving you!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Alright, look, I think there’s a point where you can double back and join me farther down this tunnel.

SEREBELLA REON

I’ll look for that and meet you up ahead.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Ok! Toss me a grenade, just in case.

SEREBELLA REON

Hold on a sec.

PAUSE A BEAT

SEREBELLA REON (CONT'D)

Here!

SOUND: ITEM BEING DROPPED AND CAUGHT

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Thanks!

SEREBELLA REON

Don’t bring the place down on yourself.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Thanks, I’ll try not to. See you down the tunnel.

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS MOVING SLOWLY DUE TO SPRAINED ANKLE

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

(to himself)

Ok Jonas, walk through the pain. Almost there...

SOUND: FOOTSTEPS LABORED

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

Not too much farther. I should be able to see...

SEREBELLA REON

(from far down the tunnel) Here Jonas!

JONAS ALDRIDGE

There you are! Stay there, I’m almost...

SOUND: GUNSHOT HITTING JONAS, MORE GUNSHOTS

JONAS ALDRIDGE (CONT'D)

(getting hit by bullet) Unnhh!!

SEREBELLA REON

Jonas!!

SOUND: GUNSHOTS, PULSE GUNS

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(taking cover)

Stay there Serebella! Is that you I see your lordship? Did you really come along to get your hands dirty this time just for little ol’ me?

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(from the opposite side of the tunnel from Serebella but much closer)

I came along to watch you die.

SOUND: GUNFIRE DIES DOWN

JONAS ALDRIDGE

Sorry to disappoint you.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

So far, but you haven’t made it out yet. Hide in your little alcove all you like.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

I don’t have far to go.

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(savoring the experience of watching Jonas getting shot)

I can see the blood from here. That looks like it was a pretty bad wound. Did you take one to the chest Jonas? Did your body armor not block that one all the way?

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(quiet, to himself)

We’ll see how you like thisgrenade you stinking, old...

SOUND: PIN FROM GRENADE TRIGGERED, FOOTSTEPS MOVING RAPIDLY IN FROM THE SIDE, A KNIFE SINKING INTO JONAS’ BACK

GENERAL HARLOW

(sneaking in and stabbing Jonas)

I see you forgot about the old abandoned corridors.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

(being stabbed) Unnnhh!!

SEREBELLA REON

(running towards them from the far end of the tunnel)

Nooooo!!! Jonas, nooo!!!

LORD CHANCELLOR HARRIS

(gloating)

How lovely! This is the end for you Mr. Aldridge.

JONAS ALDRIDGE

That’s Dr. Aldridge you prick and at least I get to take you both with me. We all get buried together.

GENERAL HARLOW

What are you doing...?

SOUND: GRENADE TOSSED ONTO GROUND TOWARDS HARRIS, EXPLOSION, TUNNEL CAVING IN, FOOTSTEPS RUNNING FAST APPROACHING THEN STOPPING

SEREBELLA REON

(screaming) JONAS!!!

SOUND: CAVE IN, SEREBELLA RUNNING FOR HER LIFE

SEREBELLA REON (CONT'D)

(while running through a collapsing tunnel)

SOUND: RUNNING CONTINUED, CAVE IN INTENSIFIES THEN DIES DOWN THEN DIMINISHES COMPLETELY, FOOTSTEPS SLOWING DOWN, SEREBELLA BREATHING HEAVY, SOBBING
