Multigenerational staff may not be applicable to your camp today, but it absolutely will happen at some point, and what better time to have this in the back of your mind as summer camps eagerly way and adjust to many new guidelines being put in place as the worldwide pandemic continues.
Multigenerational staff means that some younger staff may still live at home, not be used to doing laundry, or that their summer at camp may be their first job. At the same time, the older staff probably have car payments, or a mortgage or is used to going to bed at an earlier time than 18-year-olds.
Additionally, there is a physical layer to an older generation staff where they may not be able to crawl on the ground, or have other limitations. In Ruby’s experience, she asked herself during any game “can rock paper scissors resolve this” and in most cases, the answer is yes and most people at any age can play rock paper scissors, so it is a great alternative to something like crawling under someone’s legs in freeze tag.
As we wrap our season, we hope all you leaders are ready for what summer brings us. We all know camp will be different this summer, but camp is still at heart, summer camp leaders. Send your leadership team an outline of the staff training and some of the decisions behind what you want to keep and what you want to change. Open the dialogue with your leadership team to see how decisions are made.

One of the most effective—and fun—ways to develop leadership skills in campers is through creative group projects. These hands-on initiatives empower older campers to take ownership, plan, and execute something meaningful as a team. Whether it’s organizing a talent show, producing a camp newsletter, creating a mural, or launching an environmental campaign, these projects naturally build key leadership traits: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, initiative, and resilience.
The process begins with choosing a project that requires collaboration and creativity. Campers can take on defined leadership roles—like project manager or creative director—to practice delegation and decision-making. Before kicking things off, short workshops can help teach skills like conflict resolution and effective communication.
Staff play a supportive role, checking in regularly while allowing campers to take the lead. The project culminates in a final presentation, where participants can reflect on what they’ve learned and the roles they thrived in. These debriefs are essential for reinforcing lessons in leadership and self-awareness.
This approach turns leadership training into something campers genuinely look forward to. It blends responsibility with creativity, gives them a chance to shine, and fosters confidence by letting them learn from both their successes and mistakes. When campers get to lead a meaningful project, they walk away with real-world leadership experience—and great camp memories to match.

A simple way to assess this is by determining how much your time costs the organization. When you break down your salary into an hourly rate, you start to see your work through a different lens. That perspective can be a game-changer when deciding where to focus your efforts. If you wouldn’t pay someone that hourly rate to complete a low-return task, why should the camp pay for your time to do it?
By recognizing the true value of your time, you can make more informed decisions about what to take on and what to delegate. It’s not just about working harder—it’s about working smarter to ensure your efforts bring the greatest benefit to your camp and its mission.

Retaining is recruiting. If you're new, and it's hard out there and it's like, how do I retain? I would say conduct an experience audit, see what the experience is like. Ultimately retaining is recruiting because students are looking for people in places that give them confidence and clarity about their experience and trajectory. The experience that you're offering can give them more confidence and clarity. If you can retain, you'll find it much, much easier to recruit.

I think just really knowing what your staff are, like what they're hoping to gain and what, what growth that they want to have, whether it's personal growth, professional growth, really speaks a lot about how much we care for them, and then if we circle back to that and help them.

I want to share something that I know has been on this podcast before, but it has come back around to me recently so during the summer. This past summer, I had the opportunity to drive buses for a summer camp and had done those over a few occasions throughout the summer. And just a couple weeks ago I got a thank you note from them hand written to thank me for my time. Even though this was a paid gig, the fact that they took the time to physically write that note with pen and paper really meant a lot and makes me want to do that type of gig again. I encourage you all to think about who some of the helpers are that are in your world and take a few moment to write them a note. Giving someone a physical thank you note allows them to post it on their refrigerator or somewhere in their home where they will see it and think of you.

Thank you so much. I have two main points. The first is about a structured communication format that I've been developing to enhance how we approach sending out information. It emphasizes understanding what motivates parents, staff, rental group contacts, and other stakeholders to *open*, *read*, *absorb*, *act on*, and *share* the messages they receive. This structure can simplify communication, whether for big changes or small updates.
One of the key changes I hope we make is to be intentional in our communication. By using the "open, read, absorb, act, and share" framework, we can break down complex messages into manageable parts. This approach makes it easier to both plan and measure the impact of our communications.
The second point relates to organizing tasks, particularly for those of us with ADHD, where breaking down projects into steps is critical. It’s common in roles like emergency services and camp management to find people who thrive in fast-paced settings but may struggle with complex planning due to ADHD.
I recommend a tool called Goblin Tools. If you’re taking on a large or daunting project, this tool allows you to enter the project title or key concept, and it automatically breaks it down into actionable steps. This not only makes tasks less overwhelming but also helps in delegating or prioritizing effectively. Sometimes, the simple act of breaking down a complex task can be the key to making real progress.

Running a camp can be challenging, especially when essential supplies like sharpies, tape, and garbage bags seem to vanish. Over the years, I've discovered a simple yet effective strategy: stockpile these items discreetly.
Every summer, I buy double the sharpies and tape we need and stash them away in my bedroom— a place where no one goes. When staff members are in a pinch, I can easily provide them with what they need, creating a small but meaningful moment of relief.
While we do have garbage bags, they often require negotiating with the kitchen staff, and they run out quickly. By keeping a stash of these essentials, I ensure that my team feels supported. This little gesture not only helps in the moment but also builds goodwill among the staff.

I came across this tool from Daily Greatness and I thought I would share it with you. The exercise is called Stop, Start, Continue and I think it’s great for this time of year, but I would also take it away for next summer to share with staff and have them do it several times throughout the summer. First, take a moment to think about what you need to STOP doing; what is that thing you’re doing that’s creating issues or stress or you know personal problems for yourself or your staff? What do you need to START doing? What is something that would help you make you feel better, help you deal better with communication with your staff, whatever it is, just start doing it. Third, what is something you CONTINUE with? This could be your process in your business or people you work with, marketing activities, training, sessions or programs. I love the simplicity of it stop start continue and now that you’ve taken the time to ask yourself some questions and get a clear picture of how things have been working, how you’re feeling and what needs to change; moving forward it’s the perfect opportunity to set yourself some new goals for the year ahead

We implemented a new protocol to manage cell phone usage, now in its second year, and it's been highly effective. Previously, staff needed cell phones for music and photos, which created confusion about who could use personal phones. To solve this, we bought five second hand Android phones with fluorescent orange cases, easily identifiable as camp property, and set up a sign-out system for staff use during programs. They also got a Spotify account for music. Key staff, like directors, put orange tape on their personal phones to distinguish them as official. This reduced unauthorized phone use significantly compared to the previous year.

One of the more important things you can do is to know what you are going to do first at staff training. Throughout the first hour or two of staff training, be extremely intentional to set the tone for your staff training. You can use these moments to have your staff reflect on their own nervousness and anxiety in a way that helps to build empathy with campers for their first couple of hours at camp.

One idea that I use to help reinforce learning taught throughout training is to have designated staff members act as note takers during the day. The following day, provide print outs of the notes everywhere your staff will be. On the tables during meals, in the bathrooms, on staff pillows and literally everywhere else possible. One thing I like to do is provide notices on the walls in the bathrooms highlighting whats going to be covered today and key takeaways from yesterdays training.
Writing things down and sharing with your staff helps to reinforce retention with you staff and can be a tool to demonstrate progress for your staff during the training sessions.

Let’s find ways to introduce our staff to the reality of working at camp. If we could find ways to introduce our staff to camp, show them what camp looks like or feels like. Let’s frontload this by saying that Beth is in no way diminishing people’s triggers. There are ones that are certainly important and we need to be aware of them. People have gone through so many different types of stress, PTSD, etc…
When we are stressed, we are often on the lookout for our triggers, big and small. There are words or signs or triggers that can cause us to be more negative, anxious or fearful. Why not teach your staff to pay attention to their glimmers, the opposite of triggers. The little moment of peace or joy that allow our nervous system to be safe and connected. When you look for them, you will find them everywhere. At the end of your training day, ask your campers to share their glimmers to allow you to focus on the bright moments throughout the day.

Vulnerability is a powerful tool that we should all learn to harness and today we want to share thoughts on how we believe vulnerability can be used to repair relationships. As leaders, there are going to be times where we need to have hard conversations AND there will be times where we screw up having those conversations. When we go back to that person to reconcile, there are three phrases that you can use to demonstrate vulnerability:
Teach these phrases to your staff. It demonstrates reflection in our work and demonstrating vulnerability allows us to recover from our mistakes with ease.

Lifeguard training at camp is weather dependent. Yet, as camp leaders, we depend on our staff to obtain the right training and certifications to ensure our camp programs run throughout the summer. Inclement weather is going to happen, leverage your resources to ensure your lifeguards are trained. Local community centres or hotels may have availability throughout the day that you could rent in the event of bad weather. Pool availability and your capability to rent them is going to help to ensure that your camp’s lifeguard training and schedule stays a float!

We were once again reminded this year at the Women in Camp Summit that some folks are just going to come early to help. As camp professionals, it’s always important to keep a list of tasks that need to take place. We’re all camp people and we’re always willing to help, always keep that in mind.
