We are back after a much needed week off here in the beginning of May, worked out perfectly, because I was a little bit under the weather after. We had like a five day stretch where we did something every single day, as we were celebrating a lot of stuff you know, phyllis' birthday as well as hanging out in Nakama hosting the ramen eating contest, which was a lot of fun. But, eric, we are back to the grind here with the May edition of Late to the Party, and this one works out perfectly because there is a very, very highly anticipated prequel coming out here at the end of May, and, of course, that'll be Mad Max Furiosa Well, furiosa, I should say a Mad Max story and this, as we are talking about today, is 2015's Mad Max Fury Road, a movie, eric, that you have seen, but I had circled it a long time ago. I mean, the movie's been out almost 10 years and it's just something that I never got to check out. So very, very excited to discuss that here with you today.

Super exciting because I wasn't sure whether or not I'd see this movie, because I didn't really want to go alone, which was the first kind of. The first thing that happened to me that when I walked out of the theater was man. I saw Mad Max Fury Road and I was like I really wish I would have seen that with a group of people. So I'm excited. We had a lot of movies that we kind of pushed to the side to fit this one in, curious whether or not this was your cup of tea. I think that's always been the question here. So I'm excited to see what happened with your experience, to dive into it and to also give my thoughts on the film, because it's not a movie that I've talked about a lot, but it is a movie I've thought about several times since watching it and I know some people have rewatched it several times, if not more, since then. So it's a very highly acclaimed movie and I'm excited to get into it.

Yeah, a movie with a very, very long and complex history and lore and fandom. So we always have to keep that in mind when we talk about these films that are really iconic. You know we're talking about films that go back all the way to, I think, what the 70s, 80s, when we're talking about the Mel Gibson one. So, but we started with 2015 because, I'm going to be honest, I don't know, Eric, if you're gonna go back and watch those. I'm certainly not. So you get 2015 and forward, so be happy about that. But if you are new to the way for a podcast or if you're a returning listener, I want to thank you so much for tuning in. But without further ado, Eric, we've had enough time off. Let's just go ahead and jump right into it. Let's get to the synopsis of the film. This was directed by George Miller. As mentioned, came out in 2015. An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet. In a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken and most everyone is crazed, fighting for the necessities of life, Within this world exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order.

Eric, I remember when this movie came out it was very similar to as far as like the hype and just as how many people were talking about it because of how much fun they had in the theater, Very similar to word of mouth when it comes to Dune a couple of years ago, and it was a movie that again, just never. I never found myself wanting to go see. I don't remember you ever asking me to go see it or even if you did, I was like no, that doesn't really look like something that interests me. Most likely because I thought of the old films and I was like, no, that definitely wasn't my cup of tea or in my bag.
Speaker 2:
But seeing the promotional material for Furiosa, I was like you know what? That looks pretty interesting. I have to go back and at least watch 2015's mad max and I gotta tell you, eric, I had a fucking blast with this movie. It is balls to the wall from beginning to end. It does not slow down. Well, it does slow down, but it slows down in the right parts but then picks up the action and the cinematography and the music and all of that just like culminates into this one fun, amazing time, and I am mad at myself for not having watched it sooner, because it is a hell of a time.

It's a good thing you didn't, because now we can talk about it If it's the late, to the party episode theme. Very, very well, I'm glad to hear you say that this is a movie, phil, that, like I just don't see how you can hate it. I think people love this movie, as they should. I think I'm curious where we both landed on how much we loved it, given how much we didn't know about the lore and, like you, this is my first Mad Max experience as well. I did see it the year that it came out really, really enjoyed it. I'm sure I asked you to go see it and you told me to fuck right off, because that's what you typically do when there's something you've what was happening in 2015.
Speaker 1:
Let's see look, because you prejudge everything so quickly and you just immediately write it off. So I'm sure it was one of those like yeah, why did you even ask me dummy? And I just watched it by myself and by myself.
Speaker 2:
Jurassic World came out that year. I was probably busy seeing that again you were just watching that.
Speaker 1:
So, and I think I might have seen this with like a family member or two Nothing crazy. This with like a family member or two, nothing crazy. But like I didn't get to see this with like a group of friends that I would talk about this movie for years afterwards, so my experience definitely different. I think it's good to put that in context, because we are not the mad max diehards. Like we came into this film it's the greatest thing ever, but I do think it is one of the great films of the recent generation and a lot of people say, one of the best action movies ever ever created. So I'm very curious, phil, to kind of see where you sat on it. Um, I'm not sure if you want to jump into a synopsis, but whether or not you do that, I'd to know afterwards what did you think about just jumping into this world and the way the movie starts off, because it definitely starts off with a bang.
Speaker 2:
Yeah, it doesn't really do much to tell you about the lore and the backstory and, to be honest, I mean, when you're talking about a franchise that's been around for decades, I could have gone in and looked into it, but I didn't do that. I just wanted to just watch the film and, you know, experience it as as it happened. And while I was certainly confused in the beginning, like wondering who were these pale men that are trying to grab for their the steering wheels, why, why is this happening? Why did Charlize Theron steal a bunch of women and hide them away in a big truck but honestly, all of that, this is a film that just doesn't really need that type of exposition and I am glad that there is world building in here and it made me again want to learn more about it, not to the extent that, again, I'm not going to go watch the older movies, but I am excited for the future of this franchise. We'll talk about this here, about the future of the films here, in just a moment later on in this episode. But there is just enough like exposition and enough storytelling within the actual, you know, the actions of the characters, that I didn't need some kind of like lore, you know from the beginning.

We just saw now this is a good example of this Remember, we just saw the mummy in theaters and all of that helps, like all that flashback and all of that helps. But when we're talking about Mad Max in an apocalyptic setting, how far back are you really going to go to explain how all these tribes ended up hoarding water and why are there only so many women left in the world that I don't need all that. I don't need all that, especially when you're immediately going into a two hour long car chase. I don't need any of it. So I went into it a little bit worried because I was like man, how am I going to follow this? I knew it wasn't like to the extent of lore as Dune, but I know there was extensive backstory to this. But you know, coming out of it I feel good and, like I said, I'm really excited for the prequel, to learn more about Charlize Theron's character and then also what the future holds for the franchise.

Yeah, and it should be no surprise that Charlize Theron has an actual like spinoff movie of her character. While she's not replaying that role for obvious reasons, it is interesting that that happened and we'll kind of talk about that when we talk about like characters, that that happened and we'll kind of talk about that when we talk about like characters. But before we jump there, phil, I definitely want to be the one that brings up the cinematography and the set pieces, the actual action, the meat and potatoes of this film. You mentioned balls to the wall action and that is what is here. There are some slow points, but nothing that ever slows down for too long and I think, just from a cinema perspective, I think this is one of those cinematic experiences you should try to go actively, proactively, enjoy experience and just see for the first time, if you haven't, because you don't really feel you don't really have to know the other movies to enjoy it, and what I've heard is the other movies to enjoy it, and what I've heard is knowing the movies does enhance it. So that's like a perfect storm for a movie that puts itself out there as this bombastic, just exploration of how to make an action film right, and I think it does it extremely well, but there are many characters that we kind of see throughout the film. It's obviously led by our main two.

You mentioned a little bit about Charlize Theron. I'm very curious what you thought of Tom Hardy's performance, as he's essentially taking the mantle for Mel Gibson and I know that could be a mixed bag. For me I was okay with it, it was nothing special. Where did you fall on the Tom Hardy train?
Speaker 2:
I think I definitely want to know more about the Mad Max character. Now, there were talks because this movie was in production hell for years and there was actually plans on getting Mel Gibson to return, but he himself actually said that he had aged out of this role. So, you know, in comes Tom Hardy and Eric I'm actually gonna talk to you in here just a moment about some of the other finalists for for Max in terms of casting. But yeah, I thought he was fine. I came away with from it like I wanting to know more about I, just after I made this whole spiel about exposition. I do want to know more about Max. You know his backstory? Like, uh, why is he? You know, I I'm still kind of confused on what a blood bag is, like, what the purpose is of that. Would like to you know and I'm sure I can figure that out through some research, but finding out you know, why is max, this, uh, this, this hero? There was also some theories that, like this is being told through. You know, since this is being told through this, like the, the way of, like a story, like a, like a legend, you know, maybe max didn't even look like this. You know he could have looked totally different or maybe had totally different intentions, but I thought tom hardy did a fine job.
Speaker 2:
Um, I actually learned that him and charlize their own did not get along on this set. Uh, they actually went at it quite a bit and years later, when they worked together again, also with George Miller, he actually had apologized to Charlize Theron and stated that he wished he had been a better co-star for her and he just wasn't ready for it at this time. We're talking about 2015, tom Hardy, so you know how much has he changed? Probably a lot within the last decade. So I think that's interesting that they clashed, talking about two big time stars. But yeah, I thought he did a fine job. I think I just wanted to learn more about who Max is as a person at the end of the day, and hopefully we'll get that in the future.
Speaker 1:
Yeah, and it should be kind of a prelude to what we know when we talk about our scores for the film, should be a preload to why I chose my score which is a good one, this movie it's really, really good. But I found Tom Hardy's character to be the most lackluster and the reason for that is because I just remember and again, I have not seen this film in years, so this is not for me a movie I just put on every year to enjoy. If you do makes total sense, no arguments here. But for me, one of the reasons I don't do that is because Tom Hardy was just basically like grunts. He was a grunting leading man. He made more noises than he did like dialogue and dialogue that mattered or was important.
Speaker 1:
And I think you bring up a good point. Like, this movie doesn't do a lot of exposition, but I do wish for his character. We got a little bit more to your point. I think that's an absolutely great point to make. Were there any other characters that kind of stood out to you as personal favorites? I'm really curious if we land on the same one loved nicholas holt.
Speaker 2:
I was like I was like, man, who, who is that? So I I had to look it up in the moment. I was like, oh okay, yeah, nicholas Holt was great. And when you talk about, again, a side character that we know more about than Max, right, that should not be the case. The name of the movie and this is also something I saw criticism of this isn't necessarily a Mad Max story, like he is there, but it's about Furiosa, it's about the wives, you know, it's about Nicholas Holt's journey, and that was done very, very well. So, yeah, he was excellent and you know, which shouldn't really be surprising considering what we know about him now so he was great.
Speaker 1:
Yeah, I'm glad to hear you say that that is. That is also my MVP, other than our main two leads, specifically Charlie Saron, who I think again did a great job and was fantastic. The rest of the supporting cast really really great. But again, phil, this movie is based off of its action set pieces and it's really it finds its love from all of the things cinematography wise that it does, its love from all of the things cinematography wise that it does. So I'm very curious if you'll take us back to the movie. What were a couple of standout moments from the movie that really caught your attention? Because, again, you were kind of giddy to start the episode to talk about this. So I really want to throw that on you now that you've experienced it so recent.
Speaker 2:
Yeah, I mean again in the very beginning, because I was kind of confused about what was going on and who these characters were and why they some of them look the way that they do. It's all kind of confusing, uh. But then you know, when the initial chase scene starts, like you said, I don't really know how you can't be immediately invested in it, even if you're not necessarily like the biggest action movie fan. Uh, the fact that this flows so incredibly well, I think, would keep you invested. So they have those moments of the slowdown time, but it's just so crazy. I mean, you get a lot of practical effects here and there's some questionable CGI. It's a 10-year-old movie.
Speaker 2:
They also had to shoot the movie in daytime and then, you know, make it nighttime. So there's going to be a few hiccups along the way. But the explosions and the car, the car combat Eric, it makes me want to go back and play and this is kind of veering off a little bit. It makes me go want to go back and play the video game tie-in that a lot of people really love, like it's a little bit of a cult classic. It makes me want to go back and play and I know I have it in my library because it was one time uh like the game of the month for playstation, like years ago. So it kind of makes me want to go in and try that. I don't know if you have any uh desire to do that, but I mean, if it's anything like the movie, it's got to be pretty fun I heard really good things about that as well.

Ironically, what this movie made me want to play and you tell me if I'm right, because you're the guy for this but borderlands like this definitely had.
Speaker 2:
This is our. We already have a borderlands movie. We don't need a borderlands movie.
Speaker 1:
That was exactly what I was going to transition to was like, I feel so bad for the borderlands movie coming out this year because even with some of the elements you brought up, like the cgi and the development hell and all that like that movie Fury Road is fantastic. I can't imagine, even if everything fell in line perfectly for the Borderlands movie that they're making, can't imagine that it's gonna touch anything close to what Fury Road offered. And again, phil, while it doesn't make me want to play the original Mad Max game, which I've heard a lot of good things about, it was one of those games back in 2015. I was like, should I start playing Borderlands? Is this Borderlands vibe? So I'm glad to hear you kind of confirm that.
Speaker 2:
Yeah, I think with Borderlands it's more more of a focus on, like, the really crazy guns like there are. There is vehicle combat in Borderlands but like, that's not what I had fun doing in the Borderlands games. But yeah, and to talk about a movie that's aged very well, if this comes out like they do a 10 year anniversary release next year, I'm going to go see it. I'm mad, like I said, that I didn't get to see this in theaters. It is a spectacle meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible, so I'm excited. I hope that they do that next year.

To rewind a little bit, eric, I want to tell you some of these other people that were finalists actually to Playmax, and one of these I'm actually glad it didn't happen, because we would have had this performance and we wouldn't have gotten another one. So, army Hammer, which he is in a couple of films that we're familiar with I forgot to write those down, but Jeremy Renner, michael Fassbender, eric Bana, eminem and, unfortunately, heath Ledger was very close to being cast in this film and unfortunately he passed away. So I'm actually glad we didn't get the Heath Ledger performance, because if he was in this film one, I wouldn't have skipped it in 2015, for sure, but you know we would be where we are now. So those are some of the names. Any of those do you think you would? Uh, you think would deliver other than you know? Heath Ledger. But any of those do you think you would? You think would deliver other than you know? Heath Ledger, but any of those other names you think would have been a better choice than Tom Hardy?

Oh, hell yeah, you got to give us Marshall Mathers dude.
Speaker 2:
Eminem showed up in 8 Mile, killed it almost. I think he was like nominated for an Oscar and then hasn't done anything since. He's done like a cameo here and there where he's just himself. But he gave that performance, which was basically just himself, and then was like all right, that's enough.
Speaker 1:
That's all we need. Yeah, just drop the mic Again. One of the legends in the game. He dropped the mic early. I would have loved to see him make his acting return to a Mad Max Fury Road. Honestly, would have been hilarious. There definitely would have been a lot more dialogue.
Speaker 2:
I can tell you that much. I would really like to see him rap, battle the villain with the mask.
Speaker 1:
Also, he would have had the main theme like a Venom version of Mad.

Max Of Fury Road yeah.

That would have been absolutely something. That's definitely what I'm going for there. But, phil, anything else about this movie that you kind of want to touch on, that you want to kind of remember or recall, because I think we'll kind of talk about, you know, the overall reception of the movie, what we kind of gave a grade, if you have a grade for that, I think I know mine, I'm pretty confident in mine. But then I'd love to talk about, like, the future, and you know what is next for Mad Max, because we are seeing Furiosa. That is our plan this month, which is the whole point of this episode. So, phil, let's kind of give you a chance to see if there's anything else you want to talk about. Otherwise, let's just kind of take a look at the overall scope of the film from a Rotten Tomatoes and score perspective yeah, May is a stacked month.

Man. We have we haveiosa. I want to go see the Fall Guy, which is getting very good reviews. I think there's another film coming out that I'm just totally blanking on right now, but we're starting to ramp up and a lot of films coming out here in the theaters.
Speaker 2:
I'll start first Eric, with the box office gross, which actually really surprised me. So the film it's listed as a $185 million budget, but again, because it was in development for so long, like those numbers are probably not totally accurate and it only grossed $380 million. The way that people talk about this movie, like again back in 2015, I would have thought that it had grossed over at least at least over $500 million. $600 million, you know, talking about that, talking about that when you talk about the numbers. So that really really surprised me. I also learned that George Miller wanted to do a black and white version of the film as well, so we just saw Godzilla minus one, minus color. I'm wondering if that would have worked here in this setting. I think one of the things that works great with Fury Road is its setting and even though it's a lot of orange, I think when it's contrasted against the you know the water and the trees, the tree that we see. I think that makes it work very, very well. So, but yeah, let's move into the scores here.
Speaker 2:
Eric, as far as Rotten Tomatoes, 97% certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes score and 86% audience score, and the average score on Letterboxd is a 4.2. And as of right now, I watched this movie last night, literally less than 24 hours. I came away, as you have heard me gush about it, having an absolute blast and wanting more, and I have this sitting at four stars right now. I think maybe it's certain. Well, it certainly could have been higher if Tom Hardy's character performance, or at least the character, was given more to do exposition wise, or just a little bit more backstory, a little bit more emotion from him. But because I love Charlize Theron so much, Nicholas Holt, Rosie Huntington Wheatley was able to shake off Transformers stink, to deliver a pretty good performance in this. Zoe Kravitz was good. So because of that I leave it at a four and, like I said, very excited for the future of the franchise.

That's exactly where I put the film for myself on. Letterboxd is a four out of five. I think this movie is absolutely for the right person. A four and a half or a five and I think you can go no less than a three and a half even if you casually saw or enjoyed this movie. But this movie is one of those movies that you can confidently recommend to somebody and it have something to offer and I think that's really really important. I also feel the Tom Hardy piece of it does bring it down. Also, I'm not the demographic for this movie.

So the lore and the world and all the stuff there were definitely a couple of things that skim past me story-wise. I definitely feel like if maybe I revisited it, I would enjoy it more, very much like how Dune Part 1, I enjoyed after seeing Dune Part 2. So we'll see if we walk out of Furiosa and I'm like I need to get that Mad Max kick, let me watch Fury Road. So just keep that in mind. That score is a pretty much one to one and a half watch score, which I think you have to see a movie twice for it to be concrete. So there's a little asterisk there for it to improve, but a four is very, very good and it's a movie like last year, like Oppenheimer.

I absolutely love that film. I appreciated everything it did, but I didn't exactly like resonate with it. It's not a movie I'm going to put on all the time, but for the right person who hasn't seen it, I'd love to watch it again. And if it comes back in theaters, phil, I can absolutely see us doing a watch party for that.
Speaker 2:
Yeah, a lot of sand this year. Dune 1 and 2, two, we watched the mummy uh and then we watched this and then furiosa coming down the line. I want to point out probably my favorite review here on letterboxd. Can we talk about the guy who just keeps playing his guitar? Everything around him is blowing up but he only cares about his music. My new life goal is to become as optimistic as he is, as he is. I love guitar guy so much guitar guy is the best shout out to him um, I also.
Speaker 2:
I forgot to point this out. Also, what's really cool was really cool the metronome guys on the sticks towards the end of the film. Super cool, a lot of, uh, practical effects to use there. But, um, yeah, what is the future of this film? Hold, eric, obviously furiosa is coming out here later this month and that is a prequel.
Speaker 2:
I did also learn that that was supposed to be an animated feature. At one point they were going to go. I mean, george Miller went the animated route for a little bit. So that makes sense. But there has actually been a little bit of a delay in this because at one point George Miller did sue Warner Brothers for about $7 million in unpaid earnings and the studio apparently wanted a 100 minute PG 13 movie and that is not what George Miller delivered, obviously. So there were a little bit. There was a little bit of contention there. That has been since settled. So we are, you know, conceivably on the right track and Tom Hardy is contracted to do more films in this franchise. I can't I don't have the name of the next film up here in front of me. I don't know if you have that, eric, but we are going to get one sooner or later. So at least we're getting the Furiosa fix for right now, because again I really enjoyed that character. What's the name of the actress playing Furiosa, anya Taylor? Is that her Anya?

Joy, yeah, so you know she's solid. Her eyes freak me out a little bit, but you know she's a good actress, they're just wide all the time. She's like an owl.

No, there's definitely something. There's a lot going on with that.

And Chris Hemsworth. We get Chris Hemsworth too. Who's?

probably going to steal the show. To be completely honest, I cannot wait for that portrayal Fur furiosa. This was kind of like mid last month, so the the talk was that it's gonna have a 15 minute action scene. That took about 78 days to shoot and required nearly 200 stunt workers on set daily. So I'm just excited to see what wild experience we're about to get into. I think we're to have a great time.
Speaker 1:
But, Phil, you brought up the fact that Fury Road didn't make as much money as the hype around it when it came to the fan base and just cinema guys in general. This movie, I think, does need to perform pretty well for us to keep seeing these. Because the reason I don't even really keep track of this anymore, Phil. Honestly I didn't know this movie was ever going to happen. With George Miller, I can appreciate him putting his foot down. He wants to make the movies he wants to make, but it's going to happen on his time. So we could be talking about another decade before we see another one. We could be talking about two years. I just don't hold my breath anymore. I'm excited to see this one, but as far as the future for me as a fan of watching these films. I kind of take it all with a grain of salt and I believe it when I see it.
Speaker 2:
There've been like nine Jurassic movies in the time that this, between this coming out and various, I promise you, there's been like three Jurassic movies and four seasons of a show, with a fifth season on the way I'll tell you right now we'll we'll get another trilogy for jurassic before we get another mad max. I'll tell you, we're literally getting a new jurassic next year. Uh, what are we gonna get first?
Speaker 1:
dune three or mad max six, whatever I'd say that's an easier one for mad max to clear, only because I think they're going to wait a while before they do do part three. I think they are, should they? Great question, because I want to see more very badly. But I think they actually will probably hold off for a couple of years and then I'll buy Mad Max some time. But again, I mean four toy stories. Like the time. It's crazy yeah.
Speaker 1:
And another one coming out and it's crazy, yeah, and another one coming out and another one coming.
Speaker 2:
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:
So I think it's going to be a good time. I'm really excited to do that. We'll record something for social when that happens. So be on the lookout for that mini review that we'll do and if you guys want to hear more about it, maybe we'll do something longer. But yeah, phil, really glad to hear you enjoyed Fury Road and that you're excited for Furiosa, because we've had an experience where you go see a film and then you're like, oh, we got to go see this in theaters. We got to see the rest of it. I'm not excited, so I'm glad that this didn't happen.

Yeah, but this is different than when I saw the boy in the heron, which is what you're alluding to. There's no two hour chase scene in the boy in the heron. That would have made it better. I understand, I was see. I was trying not to say.
Speaker 1:
Studio Ghibli. But you, you know, I was trying to let the viewers kind of I was trying to do like, uh, like we've been listening to so much Kendrick so I was trying to do like a double entendre. I guess I don't know it is what it is.
Speaker 2:
At this point I will say, like you talked about the furiosa 15 minute action sequence uh, it's gonna have to uh overtake the kong riding godzilla sequence in godzilla x kong.
Speaker 1:
So we'll see what happens phil, I'm telling you right now if I don't care, I don't care how much I don't enjoy furiosa, I won't enjoy it more. I won't enjoy Furiosa, I won't enjoy it more, I won't enjoy it less than Godzilla X Kong. I can guarantee you that that's fine.
Speaker 2:
You won't, but I have high expectations. Oh, and the other movie that we're going to hopefully see in May that has a lot of sand in it is Spider-Man no Way Home, you know Sandman. So just a sandy theme going on in the month of.
Speaker 1:
May and we were supposed to see the Phantom Menace.
Speaker 2:
We were supposed to see the Phantom Menace. So I know, oh my God, we told, yeah, we missed that. You know, just to end this episode, if you didn't go see the mummy in theaters, you missed just just the perfect. Like it was so good Throwback experience. It was like they don't make movies like that anymore. Man Like, oh God, what a great time.
Speaker 1:
I agree and I'm going to be honest with you. The mummy has always been like a soft spot for me, but after getting to see it in theaters and just enjoying it like in that way, it definitely went up there for like all time classics.
Speaker 2:
I agree. Yeah, I want the mummy returns in theaters. I hope they decide to re-release it in theaters because we are mummy.
Speaker 1:
Return stands for sure.
Speaker 2:
This is good, that is good.
Speaker 1:
I'll put that clip in. Yes, do that. All right, I think. With that being said, uh, we've said everything we can on mad max. Uh, neither of us gonna go back to the originals, but hey, maybe this episode pops off and you guys are like you have to see the original.

So I'm just saying that's where you guys want to go. You want to promote mel gibson in 2024. That's what we're going to do.

We'll watch Mad Max and then we'll listen to all those recorded tapes. No, we will not.
