Speaker 1:

Hi, this is Sean Clinch, the host of Stories Inside the man Cave podcast, and this episode is brought to you by our friends at Shoal Creek Saloon, your unofficial home to UT men's and women's basketball.

Speaker 2:

And just honored to be here and honored to get to get back to the Pearly Gates College Baseball in Omaha, Nebraska.

Speaker 1:

That's right. Omaha, nebraska, beautiful place If you've never been there. It's right in America's heartland and it is amazing. The College World Series. The Texas Longhorns are not there. They have been 38 times but Texas A&M they are going for the eighth time in program history. They have yet to win a national championship, but they have the squad to do it, despite not having their best player, braden Montgomery, who was he had his ankle injured in the Super Regionals against Oregon. He had his ankle injured in the Super Regionals against Oregon. And well, the Aggies clinched their spot with a heroic effort by the son of a former Major League Baseball great who calls Austin Texas home.

Speaker 2:

Let's talk about it.

Speaker 1:

How about that? I'm still blown away by how all that went down If you watch the Texas A&M-Oregon game two in that Super Regional series, wow, wow. So Braden Montgomery had a clean break of his ankle in game one against Oregon. So Jim Slosnego had to make a call, had to make a decision. You could tell the team devastated by that injury by Braden Montgomery. But Caden Kent, who has yet to make the starting lineup for a postseason game, heading into that game, he was called upon to start at second base.

Speaker 1:

Now, keep in mind his dad, d Jeff Kent, one of the best second basemen in this modern era to play the game and ended his career with the Houston Astros and they now call the Austin Texas area home. In fact, caden Kent played his baseball, high school baseball at Lake Travis High School. Well, we know all about the greatness that Lake Travis High School baseball is. They've had some phenomenal talents come out of that high school. Well, caden stepped in in the seventh inning and this was after Oregon pitching absolutely imploded. It was just unbelievable. You thought Oregon was going to win that game, but it didn't happen. Walk after walk, then that homer Grand slam by Caden Kent. Now I believe he was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle a single double home run. All he needed was that triple to hit for the cycle for the aggies. Well, a nine run inning and 15 to 9 win. The aggies clinch a spot in the College World Series. Think about that. Now they get to spend Father's Day Jeff Kent the dad Father's Day in one of the greatest places and the greatest show on dirt, as they say, in Omaha, nebraska.

Speaker 1:

Afterwards, kate and Kent. Well, if you haven't seen this interview, you're going to have to see it again. It's unbelievable. Talking about that home run and Coach Slosnego talking about Kate and Kent, the guy who's just simply a competitor. And I dodged it and I looked at Coach and he's giving me the what the heck did you do that for? And I said it doesn't matter what I said because I had a bomb. So it's all right, it's all right.

Speaker 2:

We're good. If I had to make every single decision with my heart, caden Kemp would play every single day at whatever position he wants, because you know what kind of competitor he is and the way he's handled it this year is defining of our team. I mean, that's why he had the moment is because he hasn't pouted. He's been pissed and that's fine. I don't expect guys to be happy with not playing, but he just goes out there, takes his ground balls, gets his swings. When he hits a homer in BP he always makes sure, I see it.

Speaker 1:

That's beautiful. And you know right, when Caden's interview started, the pitch was inside and if he would have taken the hit, the ball hitting him would have scored another run. Okay, but he dodged out of the way and dodged the incoming pitch and Coach Slosdnego down the baseline. Why did you do that? And there was a little exchange of words. But you know that happens and then it paid off. The game knows game and the game of baseball, things like that happen. It's a beautiful thing, beautiful thing.

Speaker 1:

And now Texas A&M headed to the College World Series. And the crazy thing about this, and Texas A&M, obviously, as I mentioned, braden Montgomery will not be playing for the Aggies. He'll be extremely. He'll be one of the top five, I'll say top three to eight picks in next month's June amateur baseball draft. Mark my word on that. He's that good to transfer from Stanford. Now, as for the Aggies, in the College World Series, they will open up against Florida on Saturday. Four SEC schools, four Atlantic Coast Conference schools. So you're going to see a lot of inter-conference matchups in that first round in Omaha. So Texas A&M in Florida, saturday at 6 pm.

Speaker 1:

And man, if you have never seen it, I'll just tell you this If you've never seen the College World Series in person go. I got to go when it was at old Rosenblatt Field, rosenblatt Stadium. That was just indescribable, from the smell of the grass to everything going on around it the tailgates and people's front yards and parking and the hospitality of the people in Omaha is off the charts. It's moved, obviously, to the new, modern, beautiful ballpark downtown Omaha. Just as good, just not the same environment, but the College World Series, something that you, even if you're a non-sports fan, go there for four days minimum. Check it out, go to the zoo, go to Zesto's Get a burger. Check it out, go to the zoo, go to Zesto's Get a burger. It's amazing. So Texas A&M, representing the state of Texas in Omaha, nebraska and I'll say this Whenever it involves the College World Series it's always advisable, it's always great to talk about it. You.
