Hi Jill, so glad to have you here. I'm so excited about your new book, mindful Presence and Leadership Releasing Burnout, chaos and Stress. We all want to hear what led you to that process of writing this amazing book and what can people look forward to in the book when they order it.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so thank you for having me. First of all, I'm really excited to be here, and what led me to the book is my own experiences. So, having come from a background of finance and investments and had some health issues, which is all written about in the book I was instructed to learn what was influencing my mind, because really it was my mind that was getting caught in what was happening and that I did have some control over it. So it was an opening experience when I went and just did one of Jon Kabat-Zinn's MBSR programs Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programs, which are pretty well known and I learned how to relate to my stress. I learned how to tame my inner critic. I learned how to emotionally regulate all things that are really needed in order to be successful in our corporate environments. At home, whether we're a parent, whatever we're doing, if we do not have a healthy, stable mind and we are not leading from our internal presence of awareness, we are not our best selves.

Speaker 2:

Right. This is a key to basically surviving in our world these days, with all the craziness out there. You need to be able to be mindful, go within and, like you say, harness your mind or work with it so it doesn't sabotage. So we'd love to hear more about what the book is sharing and what you have to share about your process that led you there.

Speaker 1:

So my belief is leadership and mindfulness may seem mutually exclusive. However, to be an effective leader, you must maintain a clear mind, and in order to do that, you have to create order in your mind. So in order to lead others, you must first know yourself and understand who you are. Only by taking control of your own life can you lead others effectively. If you can't control yourself, how will you lead others? So my book is exploring ways to cultivate your own inner leadership by examining your mind and understanding how it shapes your behavior.

Speaker 2:

Beautiful People need that skill, wherever they work and whatever they're doing, so this is such a gift that you're offering up to humanity. What else can you share about the book, christine?

Speaker 1:

So one of the things for me, my purpose in writing, it is really to reach a broad audience, and so I do a lot of individual coaching, I do a lot of trainings in corporations, and my goal is to do more of that work where I can influence a broader spectrum of individuals and corporations. So to me, the best way to get this information out was through writing a book.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so right from the get go, I think we should share with listeners how they can get the book and how they can contact you and perhaps work with you. So can you share that list, that information? Can you share that information?

Speaker 1:

Sure. So my website has all of my information. It's wwwmindfulpresencenet, and all the ways to contact me are on that website. Excellent. And my book is out on Amazon. It will be in Barnes and Nobles shortly and it is on Kindle and Portulite Beautiful, thank you. So one of the other things I wanted to just mention about the book is we are all leaders. Rather, we're a rock star mom, we're a CEO, we are a firefighter, we're a brother, a sister, a parent, a caregiver. It doesn't matter what our role, if you will, in life is, what our career is. Leaders distinguish themselves by taking action where others hesitate, and this starts with self-awareness and self-control, and that begins with understanding the nature of your mind. So developing this inner leadership is essential, encompassing a deep understanding of one's mind, their behavior and their attitude. And this internal strength of mind fosters courage, self-confidence and a positive outlook. So effective leaders inspire and make others feel valued.

Speaker 2:

I love that, how we're all leaders in some aspect in our lives, so I feel this book is very empowering with what you're sharing, and wisdom is knowledge, understanding about the mind and how it can be haywire and we wonder why we're in chaos. Or we use mindful presence and we can then have the life that we're striving for and things feel like they're less out of control and, as you said, there's less burnout, chaos and stress out chaos and stress.

Speaker 1:

Exactly your results in life reflect your mind state and your habitual nature, and so often we get in habits thinking that everything that's happening is out of our control or it's based on circumstances or conditions that we're in, or it's based on race or how we grew up or our culture. But it's really about the health of our mind and how we see ourselves in relation to others, and we really have to be in this heart centered space where we have empathy and compassion, not only for ourselves and whatever our circumstances have been in life, but and for others.

Speaker 2:

Beautiful these are. It sounds so simple, but again, in application and practice it does take work. You have to be quite vigilant with watching what is running across your mind stream and what kind of thoughts are those. Are they sabotaging? Are they empowering your mind stream and what kind of thoughts are those? Are they sabotaging? Are they empowering? Are they going to help you complete a task? Are they going to help you to make a gain of some sort, or are they, as you said, the repeating mind patterns, the repeating thought forms that are actually self-sabotaging in nature? So this sounds like a gift to help people be aware first of all, and then break out of these sabotaging in nature. So this sounds like a gift to help people be aware first of all and then break out of these sabotaging patterning.

Speaker 1:

Yes, One of the analogies I like to use is we're writing a ship. So one of the things I talk about in my book is right thought or wholesome thinking. And right thought and wholesome thinking is when we notice that our mind's going into things that are unwholesome, unnourishing for the mind. I like to refer it as Twinkies right. Instead of feeding our mind Twinkies and Hostess cupcakes, we want to be feeding it carrots and green leafy vegetables, and that's our thought. So what are we feeding our mind all day long?

Speaker 2:

As I say, energy flows where attention goes, I think, one of the biggest currencies that we have and we have control of. Unlike the stock market or other factors, inflation and other things, we can have control of our mind and thus lies our power, as this book seems to be exhibiting and explaining and giving people technique and advice how to work with it.

Speaker 1:

I love this Exactly, and one of the things, the only thing that we are certain of in life, is that it is inherently uncertain.

Speaker 2:

Exactly.

Speaker 1:

Everything is out of our control to some extent, and so we have to be able to rest in that and accept it.

Speaker 2:

Right, there is comfort in not knowing that shift should happen in order to be okay. Everybody is looking for security or safety from a situation, circumstance, other person, outside of themselves, but you're unlocking the key of how the mind can give us that sense of stability and security, despite what is happening out there.

Speaker 1:

And you just mentioned one of the chapters in my book when you said not knowing. It's called the don't know mind.

Speaker 2:

I love it.

Speaker 1:

That is a practice in itself.

Speaker 2:

I haven't read the book yet, so I'm glad that I'm tuning into some of the some of the fruits that we can get from reading it. Tell me a little bit about that chapter.

Speaker 1:

So it's really looking at when our mind is constantly wanting to know everything, to have control. I usually identify that as a mind of somebody who's a perfectionist, really doesn't like transitions, doesn't like not knowing what's next. We train the mind to rest in not knowing and we pull in the phrase don't know. So every time your mind starts worrying about am I going to win that account, am I going to get a raise, is the market going to crash, we say don't know. And it may make us feel really uncomfortable, but we keep coming back to that training. So the mind wanders, we start to worry, we get overwhelmed and we say don't know. And then we come back to the breath or the body and then the mind may go again on something else and we say don't know, come back to the breath and the body or whatever the anchor is for you. And so it allows the mind to rest in not knowing. Because when the mind can rest in not knowing, it creates a mind that is at ease.

Speaker 1:

I love that, and so there's the comfort in not knowing which actually comes from Buddhist teachings it does, and it's in the Zen tradition, buddhism, it's the don't know mind teachings in a lot of different genres of teaching.

Speaker 2:

Right, and so you have studied Buddhism. Yes, and so a lot of these Western practical techniques for calming the mind have roots in the Buddhist teachings.

Speaker 1:

They do, they do. But the goal of my book is to really extract that, yes, and to just make this very mainstream. Yes, my mind behaves this way and I'm going to apply this practice Right. My other favorite section is taming the inner critic right, we all have inner critics, imposter syndrome, we feel like we're failures or not good enough. And you know, a lot of those teachings are just teachings of how to look at your inner narrative and to train it to look at it a different way, and there's different tips and tricks that I put into the book about how to tame your inner critic.

Speaker 2:

That's fantastic. You've already shared two techniques the resting in the not knowing mind and then taming the inner critic. When we come back, maybe you can share some of the other techniques. Of course, they're going to have to get the book and read it, and let's just let them know how to get the book again.

Speaker 1:

So they can get that on Amazon. Barnes and Nobles shortly. Kindle and Portrait.

Speaker 2:

And that book is Mindful Presence and Leadership Releasing Burnout, chaos and Stress. My guest is Christine O'Shaughnessy, author. Are you interested in natural health and regenerative healing? Speaker 2:

Welcome back. My guest is Christine O'Shaughnessy, author of Mindful Presence in Leadership Releasing Burnout, chaos and Stress. Of Mindful Presence and Leadership Releasing Burnout, chaos and Stress. Christine, if there was a message that would relate to my listeners that comes from your book and how they can improve their situation. What would that be?

Speaker 1:

Everything in your life begins with a thought. What you think and believe shapes your reality. You can change your outcome by changing the way you think, and you have the power to do this. You have the power to choose what thoughts you entertain. Do you choose thoughts that motivate, inspire, uplift you and others, or do you choose to focus on thoughts of overwhelm, struggle, exhaustion? It's your choice.

Speaker 2:

That's right, that's. I think people need to listen to that over. I want you to say it one more time because it really has you. Wait a minute. I can control my reality. I can control my life simply by what I put in my mind, what I expose myself to, and people need to think of this. It's like food what you take into your body, you're going to have repercussions. So if it's healthy, you're going to feel healthier, have more vitality and energy. If it's toxic, if it's not healthy, you're going to feel like crap. So the same thing goes with your thoughts. I want to hear that phrase once again.

Speaker 1:

Yes, what you think and believe shapes your reality. Everything begins with a thought. You can change your outcomes by changing the way you think, and you have the power to choose your thoughts. Choose thoughts that are motivating, inspiring and uplifting, and shift your internal dialogue to replace these low-energy words like struggle, overwhelm, exhaustion. If that's all you're talking about, and thinking about that is all you're going to feel.

Speaker 2:

Exactly, you're creating your reality, yes, so what would be a technique to help somebody who who's at at level, you know, at the ground level, with this aid? They don't know how to change that recurring fear or anxiety oh my gosh, I'm going to be driving in traffic. It's going to be crazy. Oh, I hope I don't get in an accident. You know somebody who has what my engineer, tom, and I called Debbie downer thoughts. How would you help reprogram somebody who tends to go to those dark places or those fear-based fear is false expectations appearing real places?

Speaker 1:

I love that. Yes, and Debbie Downer. The other phrase I love is Kathy the complainer right.

Speaker 2:

Oh, that's a new one.

Speaker 1:

That person that just complains all the time. I used to be that person. So how to do this? Start very simply with when you notice that you're going down that habit trail of negativity, you next it, next it, you stop and you say next thought. But you have to have the awareness to see that you're stuck in that.

Speaker 2:

Interesting.

Speaker 1:

And then you have a choice and you just say next, next thought. One of my teachers and mentor, tara Pillings, taught me this and it was. She said just put on a post it note all over your house the word next, next, next, dashboard of your car, next to your bed, stand on your bathroom mirror when you're brushing your teeth. Because the things that we're doing habitually we don't notice what's running in the background of our mind, and it's what's running in the background of our mind is very harming sometimes, and we keep telling our same stories over and over again, and these stories are the most awful story sometimes and we're just stuck and so now we have to wake up and look at some message that's going to remind you I don't want to think that next.

Speaker 2:

I know some people use the delete, delete, delete, that thought, delete, delete. What would you say, though, to somebody who, again, is on this automatic subconscious program that keeps running in the background and they're not aware of it, and they may feel like, oh, I have no control of that, I have no control. What would you suggest to somebody like that?

Speaker 1:

That's where I really recommend and I talk about this in my book. So that's where I really recommend and I talk about this in my book working with a coach or a mentor, because sometimes people can't see it.

Speaker 1:

And as they're working with me and they're telling it, I can see it. It's very easy for me to reflect back to them what's happening. And then every time I'm meeting with them and they're being reflected back, what this languaging, what this constant repetition of how their mind thinks? All of a sudden they can see it. Sometimes it has to be pointed out for them to see it and then it takes time to change it. So a lot of my clients that I choose to work with privately coach for six months to a year because we're completely shifting the way that they think, and some of these habits and thinking have been a lifetime 40, 50, 60 years.

Speaker 1:

It's not going to change overnight, but if you have a coach and a mentor and you work with them, there is huge change Sounds like it's basically a form of therapy. Some people have said that to me. I've had people say to me I have been in therapy for five years and I couldn't make this shift or get to the root of this one thing and like, when it hits they're just like, oh my God, that's the thing. So I constantly hear that.

Speaker 2:

So it's the importance of having somebody else mirror back to you what is this patternings. But if they were to work with some of the techniques in your book, perhaps it would become apparent to them. Oh, here's the program, here's the negative thought form, here's the background anxiety, and perhaps they could troubleshoot by using some of the techniques, although it's ideal to work with a mentor coach.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely yes, by reading it. Even one of my mother-in-law read my book for me and there was one part that she said oh, I read that part and I didn't like it because it was me Right, so she could see it. And so that will happen. And that's what I'm hoping, because the book has a lot of client stories, and I'm hoping, if it's not the way that I'm explaining the teachings, one of the stories might resonate and you'll see yourself in that story and go oh, that's me.

Speaker 2:

Christine, is there a testimony or a success story from one of the clients that you worked with? Maybe it's in your book, but I'm sure our listeners would love to hear it.

Speaker 1:

Yes, two actually come to mind, but one is someone who reached out to me from attending my corporate presentations, where I do a lot of eight-week trainings within corporations, and she reached out and said I'd like to coach with you separately because I'm having this issue with my boss. And basically she had created a story in her mind that she was going to get a horrible review in December and it was because of feedback she was getting. And what it was was. It was the story she was recreating and the feedback that she was getting was you're not being effective. And when she would go back to her boss and say, well, what does that mean? I'm not being effective? And she would say see, you're trying to defend and justify and there was this complete disconnect in communication Interesting. So we did a lot of work on improving her communication. And we did a lot of work on improving her communication and we did a lot of work at looking at her ego and where she was getting tripped up and taking the feedback and flipping it in a way that was not beneficial for her. And once she could see it, she started to shift the way that she did things and she ended up with an amazing review, she ended up befriending her boss in a way that they're completely different people but they now will go out and have dinner socially. Never expected it. She got an amazing review, a raise, and that was within four months. So we started in September.

Speaker 1:

She got her amazing review a raise, and that was within four months. So we started in September. She got her review in December and she says if I hadn't done this work, I don't think that would have been the outcome, because what I kept doing was blaming, justifying. I kept trying to defend my work. Here's this. And then she would say see, you can't hear me. So they were stuck in this disconnect of communication and, you know, someone said to me well, did you work with her boss too? And I'm like no, because it only took one person to change her mindset Right and not view her boss as the enemy, but say how am I interpreting this? What am I doing? That's causing me to respond this way. It was all changed by her changing her thinking.

Speaker 2:

Right, heal yourself, heal your relationships, heal the world. So this practice, these techniques are so important and you bring up a point. I think everybody is stuck in some kind of loop and unless they work on it and have maybe another neutral party, so to speak, that they will keep perpetuating, whether it's in marriages, whether it's in relationships of other sorts and certainly in the workplace, that a lot of people are, what we would say, clueless that this is what they're perpetuating in their reality. So these techniques tend to really bring it to the mindful awareness of what needs to shift. Absolutely. What a gift. So what's next for you, christine? The book is published. You're going to take your show on the road. What are you expecting to unfold as a result of this book?

Speaker 1:

Well, I've been blessed. Many of the corporations I've taught in over the past 20 years are offering book launch events and they're buying the book for all their employees and then having me come speak. A lot of these companies I've been working with for many years and offer multi-week trainings and individual coaching. So that I love doing because my purpose is to reach as many people as I can, to give them hope, to understand that they can change their mind and change their lives. And then doing large keynote speaking events, which is my favorite to, whatever it is universities, corporate events. I do a lot of executive leadership programs where people help me come in for a day or two and run part of the leadership program and it's wonderful.

Speaker 2:

That's fantastic. Now, what would you say to my listeners who are not here in the United States, maybe in Australia, maybe in India, maybe in Sweden how this work could benefit them?

Speaker 1:

Yes, so this is universal because we all have a mind, and it's do. We want a healthy mind and I teach worldwide. So I have clients in Asia, I have clients in Germany, london, all over the world. You know, this is the wonderful thing of having remote virtual options. You know. So through Zoom I see people all over the world.

Speaker 2:

Christine, do you have any final gem to share with our listeners from the book?

Speaker 1:

gem to share with our listeners from the book.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I really want to inspire people to buy the book and recognize that you have the potential to achieve anything you want in life, but you must decide, commit and start where you are today with what you have, no excuses and without feeling bad about your starting point. Recognize you're beginning something new, and that takes courage, and you have to do it even when you don't feel like it and when you're having a bad day. This is a lifelong commitment. It takes repetition and persistence to change the way you think, and the only time to do it is right now, in this present moment, if you want less chaos and stress and burnout in your life. Master your mind, and I really want to encourage people to. Keep this book on your desk at work, keep it on your nightstand at home, keep it in your kitchen, return to it all the time, practice the exercises frequently. The tools offered in this book only work if you take action, and repetition is the key to all learning, and it's necessary to change the inner landscape of your mind.

Speaker 2:

Beautiful. Thank you so much, christine. This has been a fascinating episode hearing about your book. And one more time how can people connect with you?

Speaker 1:

Through my website, wwwmindfulpresencenet. I also have a Facebook page. Have Mindful Presence and LinkedIn. Those are all ways that you can access my information and get in touch with me. Thank you so much. Thank you, jill, for having me. This was a pleasure and a joy to be here today. I really appreciate it.
