(A Recovery of Joy) WEEK #8 - 77th day of the Year

New Year's Theme - “REJOICE” - The joy of the Christian experience is the key theme running through this epistle. The words "joy" and "rejoice" are used 16 times in the epistle. Paul wrote Philippians at a time when he was suffering in prison (under house arrest), when he was weary and wondered if he might soon lose his life for Christ. And he wrote to people he loved. So his words to the Christians in Philippi were heavy but caring; sad but consoling; appreciative but bittersweet.

This Epistle of Philippians teaches that HUMILITY mixed with HOPE overcomes HARDSHIP and results in JOY (See Psalms 118:24 & Nehemiah 8:10)

Series Theme Verses:

*John 15:11 (KJV) These things have I spoken unto you, that my"joy"might remain in you, and that your "joy" might be full.

*Philippians 4:4 (KJV)“REJOICE” in the Lord alway: and again I say,“REJOICE”.

From these verses we see that our source of “REJOICING” comes from the Word of God on the inside of the Believer! With that being said, let’s go to chapter 2:19-30 of Paul’s letter to the Philippians! In this section of this Epistle we will see 3 servants in action!  These 3 servants served the Savior and not self! Just as we have the God-Head - the Trinity at work in our lives we have a trinity of teamwork today in this passage. We will learn alot about first Timothy, a reminder about Paul himself and finally Epaphroditus:

#1 TIMOTHY

*READ Philippians 2:19-23 (KJV) But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. 20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. 22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served WITH me in the gospel. 23 Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see (to see fully) how it will go with me.

Note V.20 “likeminded” #2473  (ee-sop’-soo-khos) equal in soul!

Note V.20 “naturally care” = genuinely take thought of!

“Timotheus” was so “likeminded” that Paul circumcised him at the start of his ministry with Paul (see Acts 16:1-3)! Notice Paul says that “Timotheus” served “WITH” him in the Gospel - he was NOT serving Paul but serving the Gospel! Paul said the thought (CARE) of the church was on his heart daily:

See 2 Corinthians 11:28 (KJV) Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

See 1 Corinthians 4:16-17 (KJV)  Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.

“Timotheus”was faithful in keeping the truth Paul had taught fresh in their minds! The Apostle Paul called “Timotheus” a co-laborer with him (see Romans 16:21 ) and he trusted him when he had to go away (see Acts 17:13-14) Speaking of Paul, he is right in the center of these 2 servants who loved Jesus and loved His church:

#2 PAUL

*READ Philippians 2:24 (KJV) But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.

Paul loved these saints at Philippi and they had loved and supported him (see Philippians 4:10-19).
