Episode 91: Be Period Positive with Author & Period Positive Founder, Chella Quint (Week Two)
I want you to feel empowered when it comes to the subject of periods; whether you are someone who has them or not! Talking about them more, normalizes the topic and understanding what is going on with your body helps you "own your period" instead of feeling like something that is happening to you...and you can do it with humor and in a light hearted way.
Chella Quint is a menstruation education innovator and activist who coined the term ‘period positive’ and started the Period Positive movement to build inclusive and sustainable menstrual literacy for all while challenging institutional menstrual shame.
Through Period Positive, she has worked in both formal and informal contexts to influence, advise, provoke, and critique the current menstrual discourse using art, design, craftivism, interactive performances, participatory research, and lots of one-to-one, heart-to-heart conversations.
She advises local, regional and international policy makers on period poverty, menstrual literacy and menstrual equity. She has developed a menstrual literacy framework after spending many years working, reading and sharing practice with participants and specialists in schools, hospitals and universities. She uses collaborative methods to support the development of Period Positive environments, and regularly volunteers with codesign partners to create and share free resources and tools that can help deliver menstrual education that is inclusive and elevates communities' needs.
As well as being a respected consultant, she is also a qualified teacher and an experienced and dynamic science communicator and public speaker. She is the author of the books Own Your Period and Be Period Positive, plus a number of chapters and articles in a variety of respected academic publications.
