Today's episode is all about the little-known secret to success for women entrepreneurs. Forget work-life balance. This is what you need if you want to be a success in business today.
What is the key to success in business today? We all know the story. Working hard to achieve your dreams while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It's a difficult balancing act, and it's only gotten harder with the advent of 24/7 connectivity and the ever-present temptations of social media.
So what's a girl to do? Start her own business, of course. But before you quit your day job and jump into the world of entrepreneurship, here's one important thing you need to remember. Forget work-life balance. What you really need is proper self-care. That's right. In order to be successful in business today, you need to make sure you're taking care of yourself first and foremost.
Don't forget, balance may be overrated. Proper self-care is key. It's essential for any woman looking to succeed in the business world.
Here's your first tip, put on your mask first. Statistically, when the little oxygen mask pops down, men put on their own mask 98 to 99% of the times, like virtually everybody who's a guy will do that. We women, not so much. Only about 40% put on our mask first.
We're taking care of everybody else around us, and the same kind of selfless behavior and the caregiver habits that we have transfer over to our business life as well. And it's no secret that managing a healthy work-life balance is hard, if not impossible. You're expected to juggle multiple jobs, family responsibilities, and never-ending errands.
It's no wonder how one is supposed to do it all, but we do really need to put our metaphorical mask on first, but that's not always the way. Fortunately, there is an easier solution, proper self-care.
Proper self-care involves being mindful and taking the time and investing in yourself. It can be anything like working out regularly, journaling your thoughts, eating wholesome food, getting good sleep. It's really anything that helps you stay grounded and boosts your mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. It counts as a part of your proper self. The root of it all lies our ability to understand when we need to take a break, take care of ourselves first, something which does not come easily for most Superwomen these days. '
So consider this as a friendly reminder. If you want to manage your daily stressors better, forget about balancing it all out and instead commit to giving yourself the care that you deserve.
And remember, self-care is not self-ish..
The second tip is set proper boundaries between your work and personal life. Setting boundaries is vital. It's often said that one of the keys to success is work hard, play hard, but if you're never actually playing, burnout is inevitable and burnout will sap your vitality and stamina, and an overload of stress could cause long-term health issues.
Achieving true wellness requires both being able to focus on work, but also manage stress levels through intentional relaxation, exercise, and healthy habits. That way you'll not only enjoy your leisure time more, but also make yourself more productive at work.
Here are the benefits of taking care of yourself both physically and mentally. Taking care of yourself just isn't about looking attractive, although, let's be honest, there's nothing more attractive than the glow of health and wellbeing. It has real tangible benefits for your life too. Through proper self-care, you can increase focus, stamina, and creative energy while maintaining clarity. In today's demanding world, it's essential to make the time to nurture yourself. The rewards are plentiful.
Tip number three: here are some ways to make time when you think you are too busy. The thought of making time for self-care and today's fast-paced world can be daunting, but it doesn't have to. The good news is that with some simple scheduling, adjustments and well considered activities, you can create a self-care routine that works for your lifestyle and blends seamlessly into your daily schedule without compromising on all the other commitments you've got.
- Like try actively scheduling time for yourself, whether it's simply reading an inspiring book or taking a bubble bath make it an appointment in your calendar and block out the time for yourself. Fueling your body with densely nutritious food choices like berries, vegetables, and healthy well-sourced proteins helps your body operate optimally, especially during stressful times.
- Ditch the sugary foods, industrial seed oils and processed carbohydrates to keep your energy levels high throughout the day.
- Prioritizing sleep to ensure adequate rest for your mind and body is also key in setting yourself up for success before the day even starts. Improved sleep hygiene is proven to support physical and mental wellbeing, including weight management.
- Stress management tools such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises or journaling can help keep anxiety levels balanced throughout the day so you're able to handle whatever comes your way. Mindfulness practices are also effective for managing stress in short bursts and provide tools that you can have at the ready for any stressful or toxic situation or person that can cause anxiety, stress, and burnout.
- And don't forget to move. Incorporate simple functional fitness routines which require only your body weight as resistance. Try routines that emphasize core strength, balance, and flexibility to start. Then build from there.
Number four: why neglecting self-care leads to burnout. Neglecting self-care can snowball into a nasty case of burnout, where exhaustion creates an endless stream of stress hormones, cortisol level skyrocket, sleep is deprived, and physical signs such as weight gain and depleted stamina inevitably will follow.
If you don't practice regular self-care, make sure you watch out or you'll find yourself going up in smoke.
So why burnout is real, and how to avoid it? Burning out creeps up on us when we least expect it. Sometimes we just don't know our limits until your body is screaming for help.
At the end of a long, tiring day, our default action might be to step back, catch a breath, but unfortunately that's not how the world works or at least it's not how it feels like it works. Overestimating the hours in a day pushing through cortisol overload and exhaustion can leave you feeling bottomless as if any energy that you had has now drained away little by little.
Not to mention that during burnout, your brain isn't working at capacity, so your stress is perceived by others as being weak, causing your professionalism to take a hit. This can cause an immense battle with your inner self daily.
It doesn't have to be this way though. You can alter where you draw that line between fully dedicating yourself to something and looking out for yourself too.
There are simple changes we can make, such as scheduling social time into our calendars, or planning realistic goals and factoring in regular breaks throughout the day. Even five-minute breaks should count because saying no before burnout creeps up is better than exploiting ourselves after it's already set in.
And tip number five: ask for help. Don't forget, if you're struggling to find some time for everything and everyone in your life except you, you can always ask for help. Be that a mentor or a coach to give guidance, or someone who holds you accountable in a group setting. Find some accountability partners. Build your team of helpers and experts. Enlist the help of a partner or buddy who will hold you accountable even on days when all you want to do is Netflix and chill, instead of meditating and focusing on yourself.
Help can come from friends and family, roommates, neighbors, and besties, a health and wellness coach, mindfulness meditation instructor. Group discussion forum . Therapist, counselor or psychologist, professional organization for women in your field. Ultimately, this will provide much needed relief for modern day pressure and guarantee the best possible successful outcomes in your entrepreneurial endeavors.
But where can you start? Well, from the workplace to home and everywhere in between proper self-care is critical for success and happiness. We need to create boundaries between our work and personal lives. Set up self-care routines, practice regular physical and mental activities. Stay mindful of burnout and incorporate self-care into our busy lifestyles.
A great first step is to start by setting realistic short-term goals that will help you move closer towards wellbeing. Most importantly, make the decision today to have a truly transformative change towards proper self-care. Your body and your mind will thank you.
