Approach to her work and operates with a truly holistic perspective, working to balance the deep connection between mind, body and soul, and I took class from Nicole at Sage and Sound on the Upper East Side.

Speaker 1:

If you've never been there, you have to run. Do not walk, because everything from the people there, the calming aroma in the space. The teachers are taught not to check it out. It's in the Upper East Side and you will. It will just like change your life completely. So please welcome Nicole Rutsch. Thank you, nicole, for coming on to the podcast today. How are you?

Speaker 2:

I'm good. How are you? I'm so excited to be here.

Speaker 1:

So excited that you're here. I took your class, your sound healing class at Sage Sound, and it was incredible for so many reasons. But I would like to start with a question that we asked at the beginning of every episode, which is, when you take away all those amazing titles, who are you? I'm a triple air sign.

Speaker 2:

Who are you? I'm a triple air sign, but I am just, you know, someone on the journey to enlighten and help people come back to a place of just like balance and harmony and peace and just enjoying their life. I think you know, when we everyone is always so stressed and anxious, I'm like why don't we just like enjoy life, with all its pleasures, even with the challenges? But just, you know we only have this one life, so we might as well just enjoy every moment of it.

Speaker 1:

I agree and I think a lot of the work that you do help grant, grounding people to who they are and getting them in, tuned with their body, which is incredible and very challenging but the I feel like the tools that people are utilizing through therapy and coaching and sound healing and and you know, maybe yoga it's it's a great pathway to sort of take those tools and apply it. When someone is feeling stressed or feeling overwhelmed, helping them get back into their inner selves and their higher selves is really important. So I am obsessed with Reiki, sound healing. I'm obsessed with it. I'm obsessed with the sound baths. Most people don't know what that is. So before we dive into sort of in depth of what it is, I'd love for you to kind of describe the experience from like a client perspective, of what Reiki, sound healing, is.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so you can think I always say you can think of Reiki as just like an energetic massage, right, and in combination with sound it adds sort of like a deeper layer to your meditation experience, or I should say like your healing journey, right.

Speaker 2:

Or I should say like your healing journey right, because we're working with modalities that are, at the end of the day, healing and healing our body, bringing our body back to, like I said, balance, harmony, giving the body, the environment to promote self-healing at the end of the day, and Reiki is such a wonderful way for you to, like I said, dive a little bit deeper into your healing journey.

Speaker 2:

We can really clear out any toxins. We can go and heal anything from your cellular structure to really, you know, healing your endocrine system, like your nervous system, like we can you know anything from your past life, any ancient karmic stuff. We can really go deep and sort of clean up those timelines so you can again, so you don't hold on to these things anymore in your life and you can move through your life a little bit lighter. So when I, you know, facilitate the sound healing experiences, these journeys with the Reiki energy that's infused in the sound baths, like I said, you just feel so rejuvenated after and just so much more connected to yourself, you know, because at the end of the day, we're connected to, we're able to connect to higher levels of consciousness, so you can really dive deep, see your authentic self, you know, see that inspiration, see that intuition, like who you are, what you want to do and, yeah, just be on that path of healing.

Speaker 1:

What was so cool about taking your class was that I was feeling the vibrations like in my chest, yeah, and a lot of times when I'm feeling stressed or whatever, I feel it in my chest and I feel it in my shoulders. So I felt like it was very informative for me and I'm very open about how I started my platform, which is I survived and, of course, when that experience happens to you, your body will share information to you and deliver information to you, and when you're ready to hear it, that's when the healing begins, I think.

Speaker 2:

Right and so talks to us constantly. It's just like we're so disconnected from it so we don't really tune into it, Of course.

Speaker 1:

And sometimes it can be terrifying. I grew up as a dancer and so when this happened in college, I was a dance and psychology major and I hated dancing because it was terrifying to me. What would my body tell me if I were to go full out, 2000%, in that ballet class? And I knew that it would share a lot of information for me. But now I'm sort of in a place where I am more than okay with experiencing whatever my body has to share with me, because I think it can help, you know, inform whatever it is that I'm doing in work personal, professional to empower others. So that's something that I love. And so through our 360 model therapy, coaching, fitness and meditation we believe that there's a 360 approach to wellness.

Speaker 1:

It's not just one size fits all, and so going from trauma to healing which is a journey it's not like a one-stop shop to developing a platform, you know, adversity can spark creation. It can spark a change in, you know, views, on certain parts of your life and maybe even yourself. I also like to look at healing as sort of like shedding what isn't you becoming who you actually are. So adversity comes in all sizes. There's no like comparison, but I'm curious for you? Was there an adversity in your life that pivoted you into this chapter that you're in today?

Speaker 2:

Yes, a hundred percent. I mean we all have our own journeys, right, and that's like a reflection of who we are now and how, at least how I share my gifts and how I want to give back. So I actually was a chef and I ran a catering business for six years in the fashion industry and, you know, while I enjoyed it, I just always thought it was never really me. And throughout my I guess, adolescence, you know, going to college, stepping into my career, onto my career path, like I noticed, I've been just like doing things that were maybe expected of me but never really felt like they were truly me at the core of my being. And again, I bring this also back to, you know, to the astrology in a sense, or just like me being an Aquarius, because I'm very like out there, I always thought of myself very being very different, seeing things with very different from a very different lens, right, and I always felt like I wasn't really fitting in Right. So I kind of like conformed and try to do all of these things right to fit in quote, unquote. And, like I said, I ran a wonderful and successful catering business which was very creative in a sense, but just like very tough on my body and very stressed, very anxious, you know all of these things, and I just um, I, I like I was just so exhausted and I just didn't. Yeah, I just needed a pause and I took a hiatus from life and just like really set with myself.

Speaker 2:

And you know, that's when I discovered these healing modalities. I discovered Reiki, like actually back in 20, I think 14. Because my grandpa passed away and it was all of a sudden. You know, I'm, I grew up in Germany and my entire family still is in Germany and I just like I felt so far away and it happened out of nowhere and I just had so many questions for him. So I received a Reiki session back in, like I said, 2014 in California, and for some reason I was able to talk to my grandpa and it was amazing. So I was introduced to this energy and I was like, what is this? This is like really so soothing and calm me down.

Speaker 3:

So then, fast forward to 2017, 2018, when I was on my own journey, I discovered, like I said, Join acclaimed educator, psychoanalyst and author of the bestselling book the Gaslight Effect, dr Robin Stern on the Gaslight Effect Podcast, where Robin interviews fascinating guests and explores gaslighting in relationships, cults and culture. You'll learn what it truly means to be gaslighted, how it feels, how to recognize it, how to recognize it, how to understand it and, ultimately, how to get out of it. Join Dr Robin Stern on the Gaslight Effect podcast. Episodes can be streamed at robinsterncom or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Speaker 2:

Further, like other modalities, including sound, I started working with the moon really manifesting and you know, releasing, practicing forgiveness ceremonies, all of this stuff, and I sort of like, little by layer, little by little, like I peeled the layers back and I was like, oh, this is actually who I am, this is what I love doing. So it was kind of like a self-discovery. And then throughout that, like I said, I was so stressed, so anxious. I never was able to quiet my mind, but for some reason, practicing and working with the energy of Reiki and also in combination with sound, I was able to really quiet the mind right and go deeper into what is actually causing the stress and anxiety, because I for so long thought it was caused because of work, but at the end of the day it was actually caused by how I was raised and how I was growing up. Right, I come from a family that's wonderful but perfectionist, right, like everything is sort of like like very loving but just like my mom has a very anxious personality and when you grow up in sort of that environment, right, your energy and your frequency is so used to vibrating on that right. So everything that you create is based on, like I said this frequency. So, naturally, I was so used to just like stress and anxiety and just like la, la, la la, just going, going, going, but that wasn't really the state that I wanted to be in.

Speaker 2:

So, like I said, throughout this journey I discovered all of these things you know about myself. It's kind of like a little bit of you know, therapy that you do for yourself. And, yeah, I just had this really calling to help others because if I was able to go and heal myself right, giving the right environment like that I, you know, sort of like created for myself York, being in such a busy, you know, cosmopolitan city, everyone is stressed, everyone is anxious, no one listens to themselves anymore, right, it's just so much. And I tried, like I said, I tried healing people with food, right, because everything that I created was very along the lines of farm to table and really, you know, giving people the perfect nutrition, but I couldn't reach people the way I wanted to. So I think for me, having this catering business and really, you know, growing up on a farm in Germany and being like really involved in food and whatnot, was sort of my gateway into really the healing, you know, and healing others, but I just it wasn't the right medium for me.

Speaker 1:

And what was that pivotal moment for you where you're like, no, I actually want to start this healing and this inner work on myself. Was it when you were burnt out, or what was that moment for you?

Speaker 2:

No, I mean, I actually I think it was COVID, because I still was running my catering business. I did like a few one-off events here and there and then, you know, COVID happened and I wasn't able to, you know, do the work for others. I wasn't able to cook for others. So it kind of like really just pushed me into stepping into my powers and throughout COVID, I mean, I sort of like had a space in the city before COVID and, you know, had a lot of clients and work with a lot of clients. But it kind of like then pushed me to just like do this full time.

Speaker 1:

And I'm curious because I talk a lot about like practical elements to managing mood, sleep and stress and having that first initial step to start I believe stems from self-love going. I love you enough to go. I need to work on myself, I need to start, I need to begin. And I'm curious for you is Reiki sort of this? It help reshape the cognitive like processes. Of course there's additional mediums that need to occur in order for that to happen, but I'm curious for you, like what happens during a session that sort of helps reframe the mind yeah.

Speaker 2:

So when you think of Reiki, you know the energy, yes, work, it's technically, it's like a form of stress reduction, right, and relaxation. But also, when you think of Reiki, the energy of chi, which is like the energy that flows through life, right, life force energy, and maybe I should explain what Reiki really stands for. It stands for spiritual life force energy. Maybe I should explain what Reiki really stands for. It stands for spiritual life force energy. So, while we all have life force energy this chi, right, this chi or ki we are connected to higher levels of consciousness. We're able to reshift how we really think, because we are coming back to our wholeness, to our pure, to our pure being, that we are at the end of the day.

Speaker 2:

So I call it the authentic self, right. You can call it um, yeah, you can call it also self-love, whatever you want to call it, right, but it brings you back to this place of like. You are one within yourself and if you're one right, then the only thing you really need to do is take care of yourself. And then also, by taking care of yourself, you're also taking care of others, right, because you need to fill up your own cup in order to serve and to be of service and to show up for others. So, and I think, even now, bringing this back maybe to the day-to-day, when we practice self-care and self-love, and coming back to our authentic self and, you know, taking steps to really nurture ourselves, we also produce and perform better right In our jobs, in our day to day. We are better partners to. You know, our loved ones, we're better coworkers, you know we're, we're all of those things, but it comes from within you, you know so.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I feel like a lot of the issues that I've gone through in my life I thought it was because of a specific event or a specific job. It's always internally, it's always something going on that you have to heal, the inner child hitting, to reach our authentic self. And I know a lot of people probably listening they're like, okay, so what's that first step to kind of hit your authentic self? And that's a huge question and a big question. But I'm curious for you because I have certain moments in my life where I'm like, okay, like I feel so aware of what I'm feeling and what others might be feeling that I lead now with such empathy and grace, and so that's one of the ways that I love myself is I try to lead by understanding the way other people are thinking, and that wasn't always the case. So, curious for you what is that first step to reaching and beginning to find that authentic self within you?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean, I think it's just finding, first of all, finding stillness, right, finding ways to reconnect to yourself. And that could be so simple Just sit in nature, just listen to the birds hug a tree. Just sit in nature because nature birds hug a tree. Just sit in nature because nature, we're so connected to it. Right, we come from mother nature, so she's so healing in so many ways. Right, by you sitting on the soil, you're grounding yourself, you're reconnecting to yourself, you're reconnecting to your roots.

Speaker 2:

And then I think for me what really helped was journaling just really sitting, writing out the good thoughts, the bad thoughts, all of it, and just really gaining some introspective on your psyche, like why, and also your emotions, right, emotions are energy in motion, so what does it show you? Like, where do you hold on to this energy? Right? Like, what is it teaching you? So I think I would say that's always like a great first step, you know, and just seeing what is it teaching you, and sometimes you know where some people don't. They're. So their mind is so busy, right, they can't even get to that place yet, right? So then I would suggest, yeah, just come to a meditation. Receive you know, gain you know, have somebody who can help you quiet that mind, do some sound baths, do some sound healing and receive some Reiki, because that helps you quiet the mind. So then we can, you know, peel the layer and come back like see really who you are. And it takes some time, it's. You know, even if you think you, everybody, you know you healed, there's always more layers to the story.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely, and usually, when you don't think you have time to focus on that work, you really need it. Yeah, and it's interesting because, again, I've never done Reiki before. I've done it a few times now, but before your class I hadn't taken it and I remember feeling the energy streaming out of my chest and I'm like what is happening right now. It was very intense and it's beautiful, but it's very intimidating. What is this energy streaming out of me right now? But I definitely felt it and I definitely felt grounded. I'm someone that loves nature, loves to feel grounded, loves to feel in tuned with my body, even when it's scary. And I'm assuming that I don't know this, but I'm assuming a lot of people that are just starting out taking these classes they're probably feeling maybe intimidated, or maybe they're feeling like what is my body telling me? So I'm curious could you break down what you're really experiencing within your body during those classes? That might feel strong or intense.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I mean so. Usually you feel maybe some tingling, you might feel heat releasing, you might feel sensations of cold moving through you. We usually say when you feel sensations of cold, like a block is being released from you, when you feel sensations of heat, something is being burned away from you, right, and it's like again, think of that energetic massage, like when massaging, massaging, massaging open these places in your body, massaging open these places in your body or maybe within your heart that felt stagnant, right. So just little by little opening up those energy points, allowing that chi energy to flow through you. Because at the end of the day, you know, when we have seven energy centers, right, the chakra system, everything should be flowing right. And of course, sometimes that's not happening. We've, you know, we have maybe some challenges, some health issues happening, right, so that energy has been blocked. So how do we unblock it so everything starts flowing again, right? So that's where you feel, like I said, these sensations moving through you.

Speaker 2:

You might feel some twitching, you might feel pressure, right, it feels like a heavy blanket is weighing over you, a little bit of pressure in the forehead, because that's sort of like that activation to you know, your intuition, higher levels of consciousness, but overall it's very soothing, very gentle. It doesn't feel. It also almost feels like waves are flowing or washing over you, but it's very soothing, it's not like aggressive, it's. It's very gentle and also um the energy, or the specific uh Reiki that I channel. It's called Holy Fire Reiki and it works individually with your own energy. So other people's energy are not, you know, involved in your experience. So it works really with your consciousness in that sense.

Speaker 1:

And I love that you sort of get an I like sort of an energy from the room when you're teaching class of, like, what do you want to feel right now? Do you want to feel grounded, do you want to feel elevated? Because I think it does help us get in tune with how we're feeling and what our body needs. And I agree, I feel emotions very deeply and I'm very aware of those emotions. But I think that with there's this cool equilibrium of like I am noticing what's happening within my body and I'm being aware of these emotions coming through and leaving, and this feels very relaxing. So it's a nice. It's a nice free flow sort of equilibrium. That that I love. Curious, like, what have you learned from yourself going from you know, running this catering business to now leading these incredible healing sessions? What have you learned about yourself through that process?

Speaker 2:

um, I am very sensitive to energy. I'm very much I I really need a lot of self-care and I'm really good with taking care of myself and nurturing myself. I feel like I've learned that, um, distraction sometimes is not the best, like I used to distract myself a lot, right, and now I feel like I'm more of an introvert. And also I think and you mentioned this a little bit earlier non-judgment right, like don't, we can never judge anybody for how, where they are, first of all, on their journey, but also like we never know how someone's day was right, like someone's reacting towards you on the subway, or it's like you know you have a return at the store and someone is super snappy, like it's not about you, right, it's never about you, it's always just like they might have a bad day. And just finding that compassion within others I think is so was one of my biggest lessons as well.

Speaker 1:

I think it's important because I think in the work that we do, even though there's various vehicles in the way that we do them, I think we are hyper aware of where it all stems from and why they're feeling the ways that they do. And that's why it's so important for people to connect to their authentic selves, to practice self-care, because it will give them the understanding and the education and the empathy for others and their experiences, and I think it stems deeper, from loving themselves. I think people are on this journey of loving oneself, unshedding what isn't really you and getting into a moment where you can feel connected to yourself.

Speaker 1:

I had a moment when I first moved to the city.

Speaker 1:

It was a very mundane day. I was walking through Central Park West which is what you do when you first move to the city, right, super like. But I, for the first time in a really long time, was feeling very present. I was smelling the exhaust out of the car as they were driving by, the horns beeping, the foliage, all of it, and it was a beautiful moment because I had realized that I was finally getting into a point where I was attuned with myself and being able to be present and aligned with the nature around me and the people around me, and that was a really cool experience, and so it's worth putting in the time and the effort into yourself, because it's like a domino effect.

Speaker 1:

It's so important to put yourself first, because then it will offset into everything that you do, and I'm so grateful for that journey and that awareness. So and this is a really hard question that we tend to ask everybody but when you're at the end of your days and you know you're reflecting on your life, what is one word you'd like to be remembered? For? It's a hard question.

Speaker 1:

It is a hard one, but I think light.

Speaker 2:

Lights.

Speaker 2:

I love that Guiding light, yeah, because I mean, I always end my meditation with this it's a Kundalini saying but the love and the love and the light in me is the love and the light in you, you know.

Speaker 2:

So I think, yeah, being on that journey really taught me that, you know, and throughout my practiceoleness, within ourselves, right, when we are whole and happy and connected, then we want that for everybody, right, and I think that's really, I think, as a collective is moving, maybe through awakening. You know it's slowly happening, but I think and Marianne Williamson talks about this all the time as well, and I think and Marianne Williamson talks about this all the time as well it's like when we really do things for ourselves and you know we are less judgmental of others, and having that sort of mindset, like I said, my success is your success, like I'm happy, I want you to be happy. You know how can we get to that place of really awakening the collective so everyone can, you know, be less judgmental, be less triggered, be less stressed, because everyone would be in such a better place you know, because it's all within us, absolutely.

Speaker 1:

And you touched upon wholeness. Can you kind of break that down? What is wholeness? How do we?

Speaker 2:

achieve wholeness. Wholeness is just being one with your mind, body and soul, and I mean that sounds so big, right, but it's like it's finding self-love within yourself. It's coming back to your authentic self. Really. Who are you? What do you need? Just discovering who you are right, because when you are whole, when you know who you are, know what you want, it's like you know you know if you like a cappuccino and espresso, right, so you. It's kind of like that makes your personality. And if you know that, then you can really show up truly as yourself and you don't need anyone else in in your experience to make you feel whole, right, you don't need your partner to I don't know give you validation, because you have that validation for yourself. And when you have that wholeness within yourself then, like I said, everything else would be so much better because we can just show up and can co-create together and can be light with one another and expand in so many ways that we don't even know.

Speaker 1:

I agree. And what do you think gets in the way of people just coming as themselves?

Speaker 2:

I think societal upbringings, it's the pressure of the world, it's expectations, but again, it's all external stuff. It has nothing to do with your internal world, right, and your internal reflects the external. So, like I said, if you I don't know, I see it a lot. Let's say in my one-on-one sessions that I do with clients right, I have like a couple that I work specifically with clients who have stress and anxiety. I work with clients who want to become pregnant and I work with clients who want to become pregnant and I work with clients who want to find love. Right, and specifically the ones who want to find love and divine partnership. Right, it's like it starts within yourself. Right, it's like you don't need anyone to fulfill you, you only need yourself and you need to become very clear with what it is that you want, because you are that vibrational being and when you have that, when you know who you are, you radiate vibration, you radiate energy and eventually that will be a vibrational match to whoever you're going to attract. But it's like it needs to start with you.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and I think oftentimes in those scenarios they're chasing after the person thinking, maybe why doesn't this person like me, why am I not good enough, when in reality it stems from yourself, of how do I love myself enough to give off the vibration and the energy for the right person to come to me? And it's such a beautiful way of looking at it because I think we again societal, we're like taught as women, like oh, we have to go get that man, get that guy, and sort of. We have these standards. And then you know, I've decided, the standards occur. My standards stem from wanting to love myself, put myself first, and then it attracts the energy. And I've noticed that when I put the work in, when I'm feeling at my highest self, I am attracting the energy that I've wanted and needed. And it is not simple, it is not easy, but it does happen. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

And I think that's with everything, it's with the job that you want, it's with the abundance and the money that you want to call into your life, right? It's all vibration, so it's really. It's this journey, I think, of self-discovery, of self-love and, like you said, like really letting go of these societal things, right? Like you, I mean, abraham Hicks always says this everything's always working out for you and for others, right? So everything is always working out for you exactly how it should be. So, just if you know that, if you let go of all the other junk that's like in the brain, I just I keep tricking myself to say I say it all the time, every single day to myself, and everything is always working out, you know and everything is always worked out.

Speaker 1:

That is one thing I am working on going with the flow. I think I'm like, yes, I will go with the flow. When does it start? What time can we fit that into the schedule? So that is one thing I am working on. Everything will work out, but I think that that's. The other thing is just being aware of who you are, accepting who you are as yourself, which I think is a nice takeaway, and I'm so grateful for you for being on here and taking the time to do this, because your class was incredible and I just felt your energy and how much you care about healing and taking care of others and servicing others, so I appreciate you. So what else do you have coming up with your sound healing classes that you want to share?

Speaker 2:

So I am actually soon I'm going to be doing a sound healing training that's based on really understanding energetics behind sound and also the energetics behind yourself, and also, um, doing building up my reiki training. Um, I mean, I do reiki trainings all the time but I also want to do, like reiki, immersion retreats, so really, you know, being held in a longer container and just really, yeah, coming together as a community and just yeah, just you know, learning about these modalities but also understanding. It's not so much learning about the, about the modalities that's obviously you know comes with it but really understanding the energetics in terms of who you are, how you can show up and how you can serve Right, because so much of it, everyone can always do everything right, it's just like a tool. You want to learn it, but how do you show up authentically as yourself, even as a healer, right, like I would?

Speaker 2:

There was a time in my life recently, I think a year and a half ago, where I couldn't show up for others. I needed to show up for myself and I I cannot serve others if I'm not whole right. So really understanding that about yourself, I think is really important and that's something that I really want to bring it to you know into the space, yes, and wisdom to know the difference like when can I serve and when am I not a place to serve?

Speaker 1:

Right, it's super vital because I think, as women, we want to give, give and give, and then we realize, oh, there's nothing left for us, and so I've decided that the only way I can serve is if I serve myself and I put the oxygen mask on first.

Speaker 2:

Exactly, yeah, I mean it's also like women by default, like we're very caring, we're very nurturing, being so. Of course, we always want to serve others first, but it's like understanding also that balance it's all about balance well.

Speaker 1:

Thank you for joining me today and for your light and for your positive energy, and I enjoyed it of course, anytime.

Speaker 2:

I'm so grateful that we met and that you came to the space and you know, everything always meant to be so I'm so grateful.
