Today, I’d love to talk about a theme very close to my heart: why does performing as a belly dancer tend to be financially strenuous? How can we improve the situation?
A little bit of background first. I have been performing belly dance professionally since 2016, and teaching belly dancing since 2014. In Tokyo, I did this in addition to a day job. Then in 2023, I relocated to a semi-rural area in the US. Since then, I’ve been performing more in community and volunteer settings. Therefore, my experience as a professional performer is skewed towards Tokyo. I believe, though, that there must be common grounds between different dance genres and regions.
