MARITZA:

Welcome to the Ring of Fire, a weekly terminology practice session for interpreters of all levels. Ring of Fire can be used for all languages, including ASL. Thanks for joining me. I'm your host, Maritza. I'll be reading terms from three categories, medical, legal, and general. I selected these terms from my interpreting sessions. To practice, listen to the terms and interpret. If you don't know a term, add it to your glossary. Nobody knows all the words, so take your time. Feel free to press pause after each term. I leave 10 seconds between terms. Before your next interpreting session, read the new terms you added to your glossary. As you read, your brain will memorize the terms. There's no need in memorizing long lists of words. It's time consuming, boring, and definitely not fun. When the term comes up when you're interpreting, your brain will recall it. You'll find the list of the words in the episode description. Download or bookmark the practice for future use. Let's get started. Medical Category. Strep Throat. Service Provider. Doctor's Office. Podiatrist. Thrush. Cervix. Kidney Stones. Jaundice. Gallbladder. Legal category. Adjudicate. Arraignment. Assault and Battery. Arrest. Plea Hearing. Argument. Protection Order. Convicted. Contested Case. General Category. Admission, Review, and Dismissal. Also known as ARD Meeting. Civics Class. Fall Behind in Class. Grade Point Average. Also known as GPA. Graduate Record Examination. Also known as GRE. Individualized Education Program. Also known as IEP. Language Arts. Flunk Out of School. Peer Support. School Counselor. How did you do? Too difficult? Too easy? How many terms did you add to your glossary? I hope you found value in this session. Now the bonus. Create a glossary by using Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Insert tabs for each sheet in the workbook and categorize them. My categories are medical, medications, commercial insurance, banking, legal, immigration, There's more, but that gives you an idea of the tabs that I use. I also have a tab called Today's Words. I have the spreadsheet open when I'm interpreting. At the end of a session, I enter the new words in the Today's Words category. At the end of the day, I enter the words in the appropriate tabs. Thanks for joining me. Tune in next week for the next Ring of Fire.
