Menopause, Melanin & Aging Like A Queen

Episode 1 - The story of me and why this podcast.

Samantha Montpetit-Huynh

Welcome to episode 1 of Menopause, Melanin and aging like a Queen.

This is episode 1 and so I thought it made sense to share a bit about me, my story and why I (finally) decided to do this podcast.

Well "it all started 53 years ago" when my white 17 year old mother gave birth to me. My father is black and he was at the ripe-ole-age of 18. Kids having kids.

They did not stay together so I was (literally) raised by a "single white female" in a predominatly white, jewish neighbourhood.

During Junior High and High School, I never felt like a fit in because I wasn't white (which I wanted to be) and the handful of black people would remind me that I wasn't "black enough" either.

After qutting high school in the middle of grade 12, I moved out at the age of 17 and joined my first gym at 18. I found the weight room and never looked back.

I got married at 30 and had two beautiful girls (Rio and Reine) who are now 22 and 19.

When Rio was a baby, I got certified as a personal trainer and since then founded and sold 2 companies, co-authored a book (Pregnancy Fitness), created an exercising program for pregnant women and a product to help with recovery which also lead to creating a certification course that is still taught today.

I overcame my (paralizing fear of public speaking) and presented at one of the biggest fitness conferences in North America for 10 years and won both personal trainer of the year and Specialty Presenter of the year.

I am also a media expert and have been on several Canadian National TV Shows such as The Marilyn Denis Show, Cityline, CBC's The National and CTV's Your Morning, to name a few.

Once Covid hit, I started experiencing my own menopausal symptoms and transitioned my business to the topic that I could understand and personally relate to.

My life also changed with the tragedy of George Floyd. After much soul searching, I finally began to learn and find my "blackness" that seemed to be hidden my entire life.

Anti-rasicm work is very much a part of my life and it is part of my business in that, I am undoing some of my own internalized racism as a bi-racial, light skinned black woman who understands the privilege that my lighter skin gives me.

I use this in my anti-oppresive approach to helping menopausal women feel strong, confident without scales, counting macros and depriving themselves.

Because we are ALL queens and deserve to feel that way.
