Menopause, Melanin & Aging Like A Queen
Menopause, anti-diet culture, anti-racism and disrupting the stigma when it comes to fitness and health especially in the menopause space.
Menopause, Melanin & Aging Like A Queen
Episode 6 - It was hard to watch my body change.
As a fitness professional, this is something that I KNOW you don’t hear enough in the fitness industry. It is HARD to watch our bodies change.
Brainwashed us to believe that if we just “do the thing”, exercise, eat etc. We will have control – until we don’t.
When I got pregnant, I knew my body had to change but why didn’t I just “bounce back”? Why did I still look pregnant? Would people take me seriously? No one talked about AFTER the baby.
Not ALL women gain weight during menopause but the vast majority do AND as black women, we already are not made up the same as small white women.
We have bigger buts, thighs and hips.
Women also carry more fat than men for child bearing.
BUT!!! I was a fitness professional. 1 thing I had control over, was the way my body looked. Until I didn't.
Then comes menopause. No one (I mean NO ONE) told me that weight gain with menopause was even a thing!!
During Covid when perimenopause really hit.
Unlike the majority of the population, I was even MORE diligent with my fitness and food.
DYK that less than 17 or 18% (??) of Canadian population participate in regular physical activity. WHAT???
Later during lockdown, clothes getting tighter.
Started dieting with Isagenix (worked for a min) then tried IF. Nope. My strict eating, Cleanses, detox’s weren’t working!!
Finally after research – menopause causes weight gain??? WHAT??
WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS???!!
Then I found out that too much exercise was (one of the culprits).
I made a decision.
1. STOP working out 5 days per week.
2. Focus MORE on reducing stress.
3. Go to bed by 9:30!!!
4. Eat even MORE protein
Be patient.
If you are following IG influencers and being bombarded by ads about weight loss in menopause and how “easy” it is, ask yourself, how EASY was it before you hit menopause?
Then add bad sleep, hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety, mood swings, depressive episodes, chronic headaches, itchy skin, joint pain....etc and ask yourself “why is it so damn hard?”
Because your body is changing at a physiological level. It is NOT THE SAME.
One thing I can say...you are worth so much more than the size of your jeans.
You got this queen.
