Episode 13 - The MYTH of weight loss in menopause.

There are MANY myths when it comes to menopause.

  • You only reach menopause once you are 50. 
  • If you aren’t having hot flashes and or night sweats, you're not suffering enough.
  • Being in your late 30’s or early 40’s is too young for menopause etc. 

There are a LOT of myths when it comes to menopause AND most of it comes from lack of research = lack of education and the UNWILLINGNESS to listen to women and validate them as opposed to look at them through a patriarchal lens which we ALL KNOW is killing women every day.
 
So with all of the myths associated with menopause and weight loss is the idea that (it’s not that complicated)...I used to say the same thing.
 
And I still do in that...if you have the means, please eat better, move your body, drink water, cut back on alcohol and focus on sleep. This should start to make you feel better. THAT part isn’t complicated.

However, there is a BIG GAP in the research and education when  it comes to menopause. 

Although a lot of women do suffer from vasomotor symptoms, I have never had a hot flash OR a night sweat, although statistically, black women suffer from more severe vasomotor symptoms than white people.
 
Alot of the women who come to me struggle with sleep, mood swings, energy, can’t focus and 99% weight gain and this is because of massive changes in progesterone, estrogen, insulin and cortisol. Loss of testosterone and HGH too.

Welcome to the first stage of chaos – perimenopause when most (not all) women will experience symptoms, also see the most body composition changes and start freaking out. I did that too.

There is also the myths that when you want to lose weight during menopause you just have to...eat more protein, cut out sugar, alcohol and coffee. Strength train 2-3 times a week and walk every day. You should be doing this ANYWAY regardless of menopause. 

So when you talk about weight loss in menopause, please let’s compare apples to apples – NOT apples to a lasagna, ok?

The reality is our bodies change so you must do something different.
