Menopause, Melanin & Aging Like A Queen

Episode 14 - My scary experience with stress and pain

• Samantha Montpetit-Huynh

I could write a book about how stress can affect your body.

Approx 15+ years ago I lived with such bad chronic pain in my knees and ankles, that I eventually ended up taking 4 migrain strength Advil gel caps per day for months.

I also was seeing an Osteopath, an RMT and naturopath to help find answers and reduce my pain.

I saw a sports medicine doctor who did blood work and x-rays. The x-rays came back normal but my blood work showed "inflammatory factors in my blood". ????

My family doctor then referred me to a Rheumatologist. I had 2 MRI's on both legs and they came back normal. The doctor said..."my job is to diagnose RA and you don't have it'.

Great. Now what?

At this time in my life, I had bought a home, had a second child, quite my job, went back to school and oepned up my own business. I was also going through a (really) rought patch with my husband.

The pain was a sign....but I didn't listen - until one day (while watching my daughter in her ballet class), I was having chest pain.

I went to the ER. They check my heart and it was fine.

I had a CT-Scan and it showed that all of the Advil I had taken, had burned a hole into my esophagus. No more NSAIDS for me. WTF was I going to do for pain now?

I was panicking. This is when another female doctor came in and asked me....

"Are you stressed"? Turn on the water works!! 😭

No one had asked me that before. I mean, sure I was stressed but isn't every mom? Business owner? Home owner?

That was a Saturday morning and after living with chronic pain for 4-6 months; by the following Wednesday, the pain was gone. Poof! Just like that.

It was like my body could finally let go because someone saw me and validated me AND the out-patient therapy helped alot too.

As women, we have normalized stress so much that for some, we have to wait to be diagnosed with something life threatening before we listen – even at that, sometimes that’s not enough.

Yes stress DOES kill and if it doesn’t you might feel like you are slowly dying because it’s so hard to manage.

Don’t wait for that project at work to end,. Don’t wait for the kids to be out of the house. Don’t wait for the money to come in.

Historically many queens lives with a lot of stress trying to protect their people and their castles and we continue to do that in our current lives but PLEASE don’t make the mistake of doing it at your own risk.

It simply is not worth it.
