Lucy is the daughter of smallholders, which initiated her gardening passion. She studied at Writtle and Wye colleges then became Horticultural Advisor at the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden, Wisley, for 6 years. She was recruited as Gardening Editor at Amateur Gardening magazine then Editor of Grow Your Own magazine. Lucy was Head Gardener for East Donyland Hall - an 85-acre Essex estate - for 9 years, and still writes fortnightly for Amateur Gardening, along with Gardeners’ World and The Garden. Lucy has contributed to various RHS books, being sole author of the RHS Step by Step Veg Patch (2012) and her brand new book, RHS Grow Food Anywhere (Jan, 2025). She has been gardening expert on BBC Essex for 10 years and broadcasts there every Sunday. Lucy sits on the RHS Fruit, Veg and Herb committee and in 2020 won Practical Journalist of the Year at the GMG Awards.

Saul Walker

Saul's big gardening break started as an apprentice with the National Trust at Antony House, near Torpoint, sponsored by the live-in family; the Carew-Poles, and later accepted to study and work at RBG Kew where he spent 4 years fulfilling a lifelong ambition and gaining experience in one of the world's best plant collections. After his time at Kew, he joined the RHS, firstly managing the Hampton Court Flower Show and then the Chelsea Flower Show; commissioning and managing exhibits, gardens and the floral marquee (among many other duties!) However, the pull back to his native Devon was too great and in 2015 he started as Head Gardener of a 12-acre private estate called Stonelands on the outskirts of Dawlish. He sits on the Trustee board  of the Hardy Plant Society, and is also a member of the RHS Tender Plant Committee and British Orchid Council judge.
